Proposed new Boise Main Library is city’s largest cultural investment to date

The main portion of the roof is scalloped, with several slanted portions facing south. The vertical portions face north and have windows. At the south end of Eighth Street, Safdie decided on glass walls on all three sides for the full height of the automated storage and retrieval system. This is where the library will keep bound periodicals, government documents, its holiday collections, and multiple copies of popular authors.

My main concern is the preemptive admission on Don Day's story that this thing will be heavily value engineered. The renders are not what the final product will be. They have to cut $20 million off the projected cost! it looks nice as shown, but what we will actually get could be a disappointment.

changes might not be to the design, per se, but to the functionality. it sounds like parking changes alone could help keep the design relatively intact.

According to IBR:

Quote:
Safdie said “not insignificant dollars for parking” can be subtracted if the city builds an off-site, 300-space parking garage rather than underground parking.
also:

Quote:
Safdie lobbied for on-site underground parking, but “we just can’t afford it,” said Booe. Instead, Booe expects to have 40 to 50 on-site surface parking spaces with the bulk of parking in a new, 300-space garage to be built in collaboration with the Capital City Development Corp. about a block from the library.

if you have an IBR subscription, there's a lot more detail in there, as well.

Here's hoping they can save most of the $$ there Boisebro. would love the design as it looks right now.

I unfortunately do not subscribe to IBR but I will take your word and quotes for it.

Same here

Welcome2Boise, I do not have a subscription to the IBR either but the article that Boisebro mentioned and Cottonwood linked to is open to the public #free. BW and LivBoise also have info in addition to what has already been posted.

I totally get where you're coming from. I remember in the 90's when the Packers were going to renovate Lambeau Field. I was thrilled when I saw the original rendering... note the arched windows and brick facade on the press box:

unfortunately, due to costs, they simplified it and ended up with this:

if I hadn't seen the original design, I would've been happy with the renovation. but... the ultimate results paled in comparison to what could've been.

I'm more optimistic about the Library, however. not sure why....

by the way, for those interested, I created a Downtown Boise Infill thread in the General forums -- mostly for my own sanity's sake to keep track of all the smaller projects in and around the CBD:

General Developments

Sawtooth was kind enough to share some of his "construction in progress" photos in the thread, as well.

Boise's Capitol Terrace undergoing renovation to emphasize nightlife

Quote:
A cornerstone of downtown Boise is getting a new look. Capitol Terrace, which has been a mainstay for nightlife and shopping since its construction in the 1980s, is about to undergo a $2 million exterior renovation to refresh the aging building with a modern paint job, canopies and a new focus on dining and nightlife over traditional retail.

I love the design!!! Absolutely great!! Like most of you, I hope the financial decisions don't hinder the beauty of it much, or, at all.

Boise is sure growing up. Fun to watch.

Gorillaz

Off-topic post here, but I thought you Boise forumers should know that the new Gorillaz album has a song called "Idaho". I'm curious why a UK songwriter/musician would title a song Idaho.

Here is the backstory:

Original song was more country. I like the album version much better.

Thanks for that. I’m a fan of Damon Alborn. Pretty song. I’m from the UK and a fan of Idaho, too.
