It was, like 1.5 or 2 million I think. The listing featured the restaurant and renovated luxury apartment above.

Also has anything opened in the Stowaway location? I haven't been down that way for a while. I heard when it closed the landlord wanted a lot in rent.
No progress except for 'equipment for sale' sign next to 'for lease' sign. I guess they left all their shit behind.

They always have wanted a lot for rent and recently wanted more, which had something to do with the Stowaway's departure. The rest I'll leave up to your imagination.

The Mule,

Putting your money where your mouth is

The pair behind Rapscallion Rogue Eatery and Two Black Sheep has launched a crowdfunding appeal for a new restaurant

Rapscallion Restaurant owners Erin Dunham and Matthew Kershaw have launched a crowdfunding campaign to open a new restaurant on James Street North.

Hamilton Spectator
By Meredith MacLeod

There was a time when a pig's head delivered to your door was a bad omen.

But if you contribute $500 to the first crowdfunding campaign for a Hamilton restaurant, it's a reward.

And for someone who pitches in the entire $100,000 sought, Hamilton restaurateurs Erin Dunham and Matthew Kershaw will name their new taco eatery in your honour.

The pair, who are the behind Hamilton hot spots Rapscallion Rogue Eatery and Two Black Sheep, has launched a Indiegogo appeal called Fund Us to Feed You (indiegogo.com/projects/fund-us-to-feed-you) to get the necessary cash to open a new location on James Street North.

The venture, a taco/bourbon/tequila restaurant, will be called The Mule, unless that big donor steps up.

Dunham and Kershaw have made a name on the Hamilton food scene for cutting-edge ventures. Rapscallion serves adventures such as tongue, cheek and chicken liver brûlée. Two Black Sheep features oysters and charcuterie.

The couple, who also own The Alex in Burlington, has funded their eateries by wiping out savings and sticking their necks out. Now they are trying to launch two at the same time, including a sister to Two Black Sheep on Ottawa Street North.

The couple didn't want to go to a bank, and taking on investors means losing some control.

"Now we are looking for fans of what we do and what we're doing for the city to come forward," said Kershaw.

The Indiegogo campaign goes to Nov. 16.

Dunham says they are asking people to give them money upfront that they would spend in the restaurant. Contributors of more than $100 will get their money back in gift cards and other rewards. Some rewards are as adventurous as Kershaw's food.

There's that roasted pig's head.

For $1,000, you get the whole pig and a case of beer. For $100,000, you get a trip to Chicago to visit the restaurant that inspired The Mule and 1,000 hours of volunteering put in by the couple and their staff.

The pair kicked off their campaign with a party at the Empire Times Building on King William Street on Thursday night. They say Hamilton is a great place to make a business out of food.

"Ten years ago would have been too soon and five years from now will be too late," said Dunham. "This is the perfect place to be in business at the perfect time."

Weirdly enough thats the exact location I had in mind when I saw "James Street North". Probably not a coincidence that Core Urban just gobbled up that building recently as well. If that goes through, it's gonna do a lot to extend the district Northward to King Street, finally.

I like all three of their existing spots, and this new one sounds right up my alley... but I feel really weird supporting a crowdfunding campaign by people who obviously have the money/connections/ability to do what they're doing already... I feel like crowdfunding should be used for people who can't get funds through traditional means.

Crowdfunding aside, it sounds like a great project, and I can't wait to gorge myself on tacos and bourbon.

I'm conflicted. I think Rapscallion is without a doubt the most overrated restaurant in all of Hamilton...but I do love me some tacos.

If the $50 option included a $50 gift card, I'd probably bite (no pun intended), but I'm not dropping $100 on something when these guys should have no issues getting the cash together themselves.

Also, this is the restaurant that's opening on King William in the Framing Place.

Not me. Been there 3 times, and absolutely loved it. Never had food like I've had there. It's an adventurous food experience. Loved the bone marrow!

What about splitting $100 with someone?

I'm kind of confused as to what "West Coast Cuisine" is.

this Rapscallion plan is pretty awesome. Already raised $17,000! I think they'll pull it off.

Think Fusion, a take on California Cuisine that has an Asian/Indian influence and a toned down American/Mexican edge to the cooking.

Bonus points for engineering the demise of the 43-year-old steakhouse directly south.

Wow, that place is done worse than the bad steak that they serve and it hasn't even officially opened yet. That place shouldn't even have the Lister name in it. The city screwed up big time here, all the red lights were there.

I am sure 28 Lister is done...given the problems its had from the start. The city messed up and has not accepted that. If the rent is past due for more than a month (money owed to the city)...shut him down. I am sure the place is nice, but I won't step foot in it.

Maybe the owners at Sirloin cellar will take over the space and revive what they have lost. I would think it would be immediately profitable from its long standing client base. Let's bring the Cellar back in a great new (old) spot...that pays homage to the city and tradition. My 2 cents.

That guy is really self destructing on Twitter. People are vultures out there on social media. As soon as something looks like a shit show, they pile on it. This won't end well.

I don't post here often but am a chronic lurker!

Wanted to share about a new non-profit shared commercial kitchen and retail space coming to Central Hamilton at 811 King St E called The Kitchen Collective.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...hen-collective

The Kitchen Collective will not only help put amazing and delicious new food options into the hands of Hamiltonians by providing access to certified commercial kitchen space, but will also help create new jobs and launch new and exciting culinary businesses, as well as assist in helping those businesses grow and connect to the Hamilton community.

I am a member of The Collective (it is a co-operative), and when it opens I will be launching a gourmet donut company called Donut Monster. Other members have coffee roasting, prepared lunches, ice cream, and candy making businesses - and our membership is growing!

Check out the link above for more details and an opportunity to try some of the products from the membership by backing our Kickstarter campaign for kitchen equipment. Please share with anyone you know who may be starting a food business here in the city - becoming a member during the Kickstarter is a great way to get free kitchen hours!
