Aside from Infinity and Ocean Heights, these towers are horribly boring. The only other building in the Dubai Marina that I really like is Grosoverner (SP) house and only because it looks awesome at night.

Damac Heights main contract goes to Arabtec, same contractor as Ocean Heights and Infinity Tower.

People should remember that the marina is pretty much an island of towers on the edge of the city, like a suburb but not quite at the same time. It will never be like a downtown because it's not mixed use, people only live not work there. There are one or two office towers and of course more hotels but other than that everything is residential. However, if you live in the marina you can walk to the shop, go eat out, etc. The marina (not all parts but should be better in years to come) comes to life at certain times of day and year. In holidays the area in front of the jumeirah beach residence gets packed because the beach is also there.
In the future I recon some more plots will be built on, some greenery will be planted (there are certain spaces for that but not much) and shops will open depending on how much demand there is.

I wonder if one of the towers will become the dominant icon of the area. So far, I have the impression that none of them clearly emerges in height, stature or design.

the pentominium will be that icon for shure.

New design... less slender.
I wonder about the height. There are rumours of a decrease.

Meanwhile,

Yep. It's essentially the world's most awe-inspiring bedroom/resort community. Nothing more, nothing less. Various arguments aside, from a purely architectural standpoint its scale alone makes it quite a sight to behold.

OMG! This project is MASSIVE! I've never seen anything like it in my life! Hundreds of supertalls in every direction and so close to eachother! Its insane...

I don't even know how they can sell all these units!

Perhaps if I was there in person I would change my mind, but in spite of all the glory and unprecedented architectural achievements of Dubai, the city still fails to impress me as much as even some medium sized cities elsewhere. It is a desert. It is flat. It feels forced, as if there is some kind of a rush to build a flash city too fast, for the wrong reasons. No matter how many buildings go up, the skyline still looks dull and sparse, like pencils sticking up out of the sand on a beach.

Most cities don't get supertalls until after many years of natural, slow growth; and most cities, including New York, have a certain proportion which Dubai seems to continually lack. Huge buildings without contextual orientation with their surroundings fall short of their potential impressiveness.
