Saturday Driving - St. John's, Trinity, Bonavista, King's Cove

Yesterday a friend, my usual hiking partner, and I decided to take it easy and spend the summer day driving around the Bonavista Peninsula - hoping to see a few icebergs and whales.

It's a scenic drive north:

Our location:

We got up at 5:30 a.m. to watch the sunrise in St. John's before setting out.

Bungalows are laying siege to the city.

Fort Amherst in the foreground, and Cape Spear in the background. Both have American military ruins along the water's edge that look awful but are fun to explore. Cape Spear is as far east as you can go in North America if you ignore Greenland, etc., which everyone does.

Our first stop was Trinity, a tourist town with a few hundred year-round residents.

Trinity East is on the other side of the harbour. When boats were the only form of transportation here, they functioned as a single community. Now you have to drive the back road to get there so they're really separate towns in daily life.

Nearby Dunfield hasn't fared as well as Trinity. It's on the way from the lighthouse back to the town.

And then the beautiful sight of Bonavista, which means beautiful sight. Here, they say, is where John Cabot made his landfall in 1497. It's one of the only rural areas that is growing here. Two dozen businesses over the past two years - everyone loves it, even with the hipsters.

Nice pictures! The rocky outcroppings seem to curve into the ocean a little bit in some places. I'm guessing that's from glacial movement. I saw something similar flying over Greenland a few weeks ago. (I didn't get to fly over Newfoundland, but I flew over millions of lakes in Labrador.)

Very nice! Some of those small settlements look like it could be in Greenland or maybe even Iceland. Thanks for sharing!

Come on, man, give us at least Iceland, maybe a hint of Faroe Islands. Greenland? You're breaking my heart.

Kidding mostly. But yeah that whole ring around the North Atlantic looks more or less the same, even Ireland (though it uses stone quite often and so looks more permanent than ours).

Thanks, all!

Newfoundland looks so fun to drive through. I'm dying to do a road trip there some time.

It's a mixed bag. Our main highways are generally in the interior - either of the bulk of the island, or its various peninsulas. But the little coastal routes that branch off all of these are great.

If there is a road on this island I haven't driven, it's not on any map. Of all of them, the one I would most recommend to tourists is of course the Viking Trail through Gros Morne National Park. It's Norway-quality scenic. And even the side routes, like the one from Rocky Harbour to Trout River, are breathtaking.

But say if you had two weeks here and had already done that on a previous trip, my personal favourite is the drive from Jacques Fontaine to Harbour Mille. There's just something especially lovely and beautiful about it. The roads are wide enough for two cars to pass comfortably, but they're still tucked into the folds of the landscape.

(This also explains what I mean about the highways. That main route in the middle, the Heritage Run, is in the centre of the peninsula. There's nothing there -it's like driving to the moon. But take any turn off, and you'll end up on a local coastal route like the Harbour Mille example).
