Inflation alone brings that up to $4.2million. Apply 2 Grey Cup wins, and significant increase in the team's value (merchandise, tickets sales, etc) and a much improved stadium - any guesses what the new naming right deal might be worth? $5million/10yrs seems like the bare minimum, IMHO.
It will be substantially more than the existing deal. This is a new era and a world class stadium. The Riders have agreed to pay the City $500k per year for the naming rights. The Riders get to keep everything above that. It will be $1-1.5 million per year IMO.

So the Riders have basically agreed to pay the CoR $125k more than the annual value of their existing deal... implies their thinking is the same as yours: they are going to be able to command a significant value for the naming rights. Good news all around.

One additional point. The $500k includes other sponsorships, so if they sell naming rights to lounges and such, the Rider get that too. Of course this will be small in comparison to the stadium name. The Riders also pay $1.5 million per year in rent and $12 per ticket facility fee (estimated to be $3.4 million per year)

Great link, thanks!

The tender has closed now for the stadium, correct? When do you think we'll hear who has been chosen?

Not exactly a timeline or target date but this is what was on cbc a few days ago.

"Brent Sjoberg, the lead official for Regina's new $278-million stadium says the final selection of a design and builder for the project will not happen until some time in the first three months of 2014."

Supposedly the final RFP was this Monday. Regina City Council approved a 100 Million dollar loan at 3.99% for the repayment term. And Chad Novak was kicked out of City Council by the mayor again. Surprise, Surprise.

That's a really nice 30 year rate to have. Still pricey paying it down (due to the sheer magnitude of the loan), but 4% is going to look amazing once interest rates return to more normal levels.

Well, it's actually a loan through the province I think. I dislike the talk of how it's going to cost $75 million more blah blah blah. Of course it will cost more than the $100 million loan. When you buy a house, do you think you're only paying the base price? Of course not. (not speaking to you specifically stormer but the proverbial 'you').

The City is taking out two loans. One is from th Province of $100 million at a super low interest rate. That one gets paid back from the facility fee. This second one in the news story is loan with 3.99% interest. The one in this news story is also $100 million so it is a bit confusing. a good portion of it is interim financing so it will be paid down when other money comes in.

Was it March or May that the design was supposed to be announced? Because if it is the former... it's getting pretty exciting.

Also, there's this:

Stadium build will help boost GDP growth
By Bruce Johnstone, The Leader-Post February 27, 2014 3:16 AM

Construction of a new $278-million stadium will help boost Regina's economic growth to 3.5 per cent in 2014, second-highest among major Canadian cities, says the Conference Board of Canada's latest forecast.

"Calgary, Regina, Edmonton, and Saskatoon will lead Canadian metropolitan areas in economic growth in 2014," said the Conference Board of Canada's metropolitan outlook released Wednesday.

Regina's estimated five per cent growth in 2013 was the third-fastest among the 28 Canadian cities surveyed by the Conference Board, while projected real gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 3.5 per cent this year will rank second only to Calgary's projected 3.7 per cent growth.

Employment has been rising for eight straight years, including a record 6.2 per cent jump in 2013. Despite record-high net inmigration and population growth, Regina's labour force participation rate last year was the highest since 1988, and the unemployment rate among the lowest in the country...

The winning bid will be selected by the end of March but final negotiations will push public release to late April or early May.
