Thanks for all the pics but something is wrong with whatever you're using to make the images smaller. Even MS paint would do a better job of preserving image quality. Would highly recommend imgur.com or Flickr.com over photobucket in general.

Similar-looking buildings go up all the time. Not a big deal.

As one can see from those photos, plus the Rolston et al, protruding boxes were apaprently 2012's architectural fad du jour.

The Rolston:

Bah, upsetting that the low-density bank site ended up staying, now orphaned on the corner.

You can click the images to see the full sized originals. I picked photo bucket just because I thought it was what worked and what was used here (for some reason I thought imgur didn't work with this site, and the last time I was using flickr was a while ago because they made the non-pro accounts a nuisance)

I enjoy getting out and snapping pics when I have the chance, and the thank-yous make it worth it, so thanks to everyone.

that fad has lasted quite a long time. Shangri-la, fairmont, capitol, tv towers.
local architects really jump on the bandwagon. lately it seems to be 'fins' (telus, MNP, nordstrom etc). i just noticed the other day however that Erickson used glass fins on the law courts building and that was in the 70's.

i have to say though, that Safeway is one of the nicest grocery stores i've ever seen. from the outside anyway -

This project also proves that awnings can be superb, especially if installed higher up for a larger building.

Fins were big in the 60s too -
Old VPL had movable fins on the south side (removed in the reno)
and the SE corner office building at Cambie & 41st still has those movable fins.

Drove past the Safeway for the first time yesterday.
It doesn't look like the site slopes that much, but the elevation of the Safeway store at the south end of the store is huge! Looks odd next to the Royal Bank.

I haven't been in the area for a while. Is this still U/C?

The store has been open for a while - just looked like business as usual.

I believe that one of the towers is still undergoing finishing. I wouldn't call it completed just yet.

Great shots.

It may be the height of the canopy that seems to overwhelm the Royal Bank.

Thanks for the pictures, looks great. I also agree the copper is much better than seafoam!
