Isolated is an interesting word for it. UIC has a terrible interface with the surrounding neighborhoods - expressways to the north and east, and a few hundred feet of greenbelt to the west. Streets don't connect and there's not a lot of urban legibility in the Kevin Lynch sense.

Certainly Chicago's other large universities do a much better job tying into their surroundings (Northwestern, UChicago, Loyola, DePaul).
