The 118-year-old Waverly Hotel (& Comfort Zone) and Silver Dollar Room are gone now.

To be replaced with a mid-rise rental building:

While I'm not a big fan of façadism, surely they could've at least saved that much of it instead of going with that anodyne podium they've unimaginatively conjured up. At least they're saving the Silver Dollar sign - hooray for heritage preservation!

Lets hope one day something nice looking and tall blocks it out where the CIBC is right now. That intersection is turning into an eyesore.

That CIBC building looks like a handsome mid-century branch. It seems weird to wish for it to be replaced in a thread lamenting heritage demolition. It’s actually better looking than the old hotel that’s been demolished.

It's a bit of a cruel irony that while 3 new unattractive, overbearing mid/high-rise buildings have gone up in the vicinity, 3 of the 4 corners of the College & Spadina intersection are still those squat little utilitarian bank buildings.

It's not an unattractive building, but is under-scaled for its position at a major intersection within an otherwise consistent 19th century street wall.

The Waverly wasn't anything architecturally noteworthy, but it was a character building and appropriate to its context and scale.

I'm not wishing for it to be replaced but lets be real. It has almost zero chance of not being replaced at some point.

This one is just sad down on King street.

4 old structures will just become facades for an ugly beast of a box. How can the architect firm be proud of this design. I could create something that would respect the old buildings so much better then this.

The west wall the Magee House (1881), a historic building in Ottawa's Hintonburg neighborhood collapsed on July 24th. The City proceeded to demolish the entire s/w corner while engineers looked into the viability of saving the rest. The City has now determined that it needs to come down. They hope to save some of the stone to incorporate into a new building of similar look and proportions.

Article on Heritage Committee's demolition approval, along with a bit on another building that partially collapse, and later half demolished by order of the City for safety reasons. Ottawa is failing when it comes to enforcing heritage protection.

Just lost a modernist gem - the 1962 Davisville Jr. Public School has finally bit the dust after a multi-year battle between the school board and preservationists:

It will be replaced by a new anodyne, architecturally insignificant school:

You gotta be serious....that's terrible. I was hoping to photograph the school before it bit the dust, but more importantly, was hoping it would be saved.

“The Post”, new Amazon headquarters in the old main post office in downtown Vancouver

This is a partial demolition. It will be hard to tell exactly when “construction” officially starts because it’s hidden inside. See thread in the Vancouver forum here. It was initially going to be redeveloped as condos but will now be office and retail.

This old building is huge. It's one entire city block. A recent announcement said that Loblaw's City Market will open there and it will be the largest supermarket on the downtown Vancouver peninsula. I'm happy about that because I live one block away. It'll be a few years before opening, though.

Another couple of pics of the Landmark on Robson demolition in Vancouver. These pics are ~20 weeks apart.

Ottawa's first Coca-Cola bottling plant has been demolished for a new condo complex above a subway entrance.

Then and now: From 1912 to 1946, Coca Cola’s first bottling plant in Ottawa was located at 430 Queen St. Today the building is home to the Glue Pot Pub, Barbarella’s VIP Cabaret and Dana’s Indian Cuisine.

Demo of the Thomas Scott Memorial Orange Hall today in Winnipeg after an unfortunate renovation and ill timed flood caused the buildings foundation to fail and start to lean. Facade was not able to be saved due to safety concerns.
