Great photos! I love the brief shot of Oakland in there.

Awesome thread. Streetscraper is establishing himself as one of the all time greats in SSP history.

Regarding San Francisco. Obviously it is a world class city. Stunning geography. Spectacular bridges. Beautiful churches. But I'm just not a big fan of the architecture. And all the wires. Can't they bury those?

Living in the city you can get stuck in your own little world/neighborhood. But I recently played tour guide to 2 sets of visiting relatives and got the broader experience of the place (again) which I can say this thread captures better than I could have ever hoped to do. I'm tempted to email them the photos so they can claim them as their own--I'm sure they took nothing like them.

No. They aren't "wires". They are catenaries for the city's numerous electrical transit vehicles (trolley busses, streetcars, modern streetcars). They have to be overhead. Incidentally, the electric power for the electric vehicles comes from a city-owned hydropower dam and so is very green and very inexpensive which is why they exist.

Most of SF is also covered in overhead electrical wires, which i'm sure you've noticed. Some people really hate them. I like them, it adds some character and a little chaos to your typical street scene. I don't like it when things are too orderly. Though if i came from a place where all the wires were underground, maybe i'd hate them too.

Surprisingly, since this is a kind of contrarian view, I agree. But let's still be clear that on SF's major arteries (at least), those overhead wires aren't power lines that could be put underground. The power transmission lines ARE underground as for example on Market Street as shown above.
