I think the surface parking is just a placeholder for future, denser development. Hopefully.

I hate parking lots in urban areas... makes me cringe.

I see in the Press-Register that Lockheed's CEO has thrown his support behind the tanker decision. I thought that was interesting he'd throw his dog in that fight but I'm sure he sees that opening up some options for Lockheed in the future with foreign partnerships.

June 19th is drawing near. If GAO waits till then or doesn't delay, that day is gonna give Mobile news about the tanker and is the day for the public hearing on the Motorsports Park that'll probably indicate if it's gonna really start very soon. Pretty big day, I'd say!

This is my first post, and I wanted, first, to thank everyone on this thread. I've enjoyed getting updates and pictures on my home city while living here in Atlanta. Second, I wanted to let everyone who is interested know that the Mobile Planning Commission is meeting at 2:00 p.m. on June 19, 2008 to discuss whether to adopt the proposed zoning ordinances for the Village of Springhill. Apparently, some business owners are still adamently opposed to the concept. Anyway, the village of springhill has started a zoning petition -- found at http://villagezoning.petitionhost.com -- and it has, to date, 280 signatures in support of the new zoning ordinance, which is quite a feat in and of itself. There is also a statement that the village put out about what the organization is attempting to accomplish. You can find it at http://www.thevillageofspringhill.co...ette/facts.asp. For those of you who are interested and can attend the June 19th meeting, this is an important one! Again, thanks for all the posts and keep it up! It's nice to get some good news about Mobile.

ha, sandebr00, right after I had just posted that June 19th was a big day because the tanker decision is due and the motorposrt park hearing is happening...you throw another June 19th thing on the fire. What a day. We might as well announce a subway system that day too. Oh, and welcome.

If you want to hear Mike Dow quickly talk about his time as mayor and a quick bit about the Motorsports Park you can listen to this interview with a Pensacola AM radio host:

http://www.ricksblog.biz/wp-content/radio/dow.mp3

Now hopes to start construction on track in October.

I had no idea the Hampton Inn extends that far west. It does wonders for that block!

I'm gonna post this tidbit in this and the P'cola thread even though I may be overstepping my welcome over here (but I hope not)...I just get motivated by the cross-communication going on between NW Florida and Mobile regarding recent developments. A couple weeks ago a Mobile councilman came to P'cola to speak about the tanker. Now there is this next week in Pensacola:

The Gulf Coast Economics Club will host Leroy Barnridge, vice president or
Northrup Grumman Corporation, at its next meeting at 11:30 a.m. June 10 at
New World Landing, 600 S. Palafox St.

Barnridge will discuss the $40 billion KC-45 tanker contract and the impact along the Gulf Coast.

As the vice president for state and local government regulations for Northrop Grumman's Air Mobility Systems market segment, his responsibilities include state and local support of existing contracts, in addition to sustainment and expansion of Air Mobility Systems business.

The meeting is free for Gulf Coast Economic Club members and $15 for guests.

A buffet lunch will be included at the meeting.

For reservations or details, call Belinda at 438-0335.

I intend to go unless something at work stops me. I'll report whatever he says (of course as I'm a loud mouth).

Not in anyway... you have been a great source of information and new opinion from outside the Mobile proper.

I would love to hear what goes on at the meeting.

thanks for the link, Del. i really hope that maritime museum pans out. i think it has the potential, coupled with the close proximity to the battleship and the possibility of the ferry service, to be one of the best attactions in the area. it would be a great feature for downtown. it looks like they're taking their time to get it right and really make it a first-class museum, which i would prefer over a quick, thrown-together job.

When I showed my three year old nephew the photo of the skyline on the cover of the June issue of Mobile Bay Monthly, he shouted, "The RSA Tower!!" Then he pointed to the Riverview and shouted, "TWO RSA Towers!!"
