For the longest time Mississauga's City Centre was nothing more than a collection of tower in park highrises and office buildings, a large shopping mall (one of the biggest in Canada), a few civic buildings (Living Arts Centre, City Hall, Library) and wide streets - not very pedestrian friendly to say the least but the times are a changing. Over the past few years a concerted effort has been put forward to dramatically transform the city centre from a car-oriented place into a vibrant and pedestrian (cyclist) friendly urban core. Over the past five years or so thousands of new residents have moved into the "downtown" core with thousands of new people to come. I would say that next summer will be a good indicator as to the state of things because a number of new civic type projects will be completed per the following.
Some of the new projects on the go and to come...
1> Parkside Village (

2> New Sheridan College campus

3> Redevelopment of the Civic/Library Square

4> New Urban Parks
5> Bus Rapid Transit and Light Rail Transit

6> Quite a few new condo projects
7> Plan to create 600km or 400+ miles of new bike paths linking all the major nodes and the villages (Port Credit, Streetsville, Clarkson, etc which are very nice to start off with) within its borders.
8> etc
Mississauga is a city in transition (suburban to urban, "suburb" to city onto itself) transition and will take years to transform itself into a urban centre and rid itself of a lot of the bad urban planning that it inflicted onto itself over the past couple of decades. Unfortunately, some of the most obvious eyesores have overshadowed a lot of the great areas that can be found throughout Mississauga.
5 years ago if I would have said that 2 of the nicest and most unique condo towers would be built in Mississauga, I would have been chased out of Ontario and told not to come back.
