Aviator’s Villa: Ultramodern House Made of Airplane Parts
Article by Steph, filed under Houses & Residential in the Architecture category.

A long, narrow ultramodern residence envisioned as a composition of disassembled aviation components offers an evocative home for a retired pilot. ‘Aviator’s Villa’ by Urban Office Architecture is elevated on a hill between a lake and a swimming pool, and exposed on three sides so it feels like it’s floating on air.

Tiny Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired House Atop Miner’s Ruins
Article by Steph, filed under Houses & Residential in the Architecture category.

Gleaming glass, oxidized steel and matte black wood contrast with the rough concrete ruins of an old miner’s shelter found in the desert near Scottsdale, Arizona. ‘Miner’s Shelter‘ was designed and built by Dave Frazee of Broken Arrow Workshop as part of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture’s student shelter program, and is situated to take advantage of the remote natural environment.

architecture / 23 May 2014 /
By Catarina de Almeida Brito

Appearing to float above the slopes of Bragança Paulista, just one hour's drive north of São Paulo, and designed by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan and his practice Studio MK27, Casa Redux surely encapsulates the idea of a dream retreat.

Stunning Modern Mansion Built On The Cliffs of Altea

Blueport Altea is luxury residential complex, imagined, designed and built by the Altea Hills Estate, architects Carlos Gilardi, Pepe Cabrera and interior designer Erik Kustner. They described this modern complex as "a project of extraordinarily beautiful and comfortable villas located in the best available spot in Altea Hills – a unique place from which the views of the bay of Altea are simply unsurpassable and where the peace and quiet, privacy and natural surroundings envelope each and every home". And this modern mansion is one of them.

Super Thin Solar Panels Crown the Spectacular 'Green Zero' Modular Getaway in Italy
by Ross Brooks, 06/03/14

Green Zero by Studio di Architettura Daniele Menichini is a new interpretation of modular housing that strives to be more like a private getaway than a place to live. The minimalist design ensures the structure is at home in almost any environment, from the backyard to the beach. Constructed using a wooden prefab exterior built on top of a natural stone foundation, the thin film solar-powered home in Italy also features an integrative rainwater management and drainage system.

Casa Caja by S-AR
June 06, 2014
Text by Peter Smisek

Architects Empower Local Labourers

Looks can be deceiving, and at first glance, Casa Caja by the Mexican outfit S-AR could be confused for a humble weekend retreat of a modernist-minded millionaire. A certain roughness, soon dispels this image, but the true nature of the project is all the more interesting.

Standing on a standard, 7 by 15 metre building plot in General Zuazua, a suburb of Monterrey – one of Mexico’s wealthiest cities – the house belongs to a low-income family. ‘Construction workers constitute a very vulnerable sector in our society because of the instability of the trade. They are constantly on the move from one building site to another, making it almost impossible to save money or apply for a loan through the government’s housing programme,’ the architects inform us.

Perched on a hill in a National Park in Girona, Villa CP is a family holiday home designed by Catalan firm Zest Architecture. Created for a client with a sharp eye for design, this project is a worthy addition to the architects’ portfolio of sustainable buildings.

Big and small windows balance views with privacy at Atelier Delphine Carrère's Villa Chiberta
15 June 2014 | 1 comment

A mixture of large and small windows puncture the cedar-clad facade of this house by French studio Atelier Delphine Carrère, to both frame views and maintain privacy (+ slideshow).
