Thanks. I will take your advice and give it a shot.

I will put it in City Discussions and call it "Little known disasters in your city"

I found this on ebay the other day.

State and Randolph in 1946.

For those of you not from Chicago. The two story Walgreens you see, was the site of the Masonic Temple Building.
The tallest building in the world from 1890 to 1892.
And the dark building on the right is Marshall Field's, with its world famous clocks.
(there's one at the other end of the block as well)

The towering building is 34 East Wacker Drive, originally known as the Jewelers Building (later the Pure Oil Building).
To prevent muggings, the jewelers could use an auto elevator that lifted cars as high as the 22nd floor.

The huge dome at the top was originally a nightclub called the Stratosphere Club.

Today, the space is the office/showroom of Helmut Jahn.

On Page One, I noticed series of images that looked like they were meant to be part of a panoramic. Unfortunately, stitching software didn't exist in the 60's. Almost 50 years later I was able to use my trusty Panorama maker program and put them together!

Here is one of the Edgewater Beach Hotel I found on Wikipedia. This is taken from Bryn Mawr and Sheridan looking south. I live about 50 stories above where that building was!

^^^What's with the strange looking tower on the left.
Did they have diving horses?

The hotel also had a taller tower. Perhaps the photo above pre-dates the second taller building.
So where would the Edgewater Beach Apartments be...to the left of the photographer?

The tower is a radio broadcast tower for a radio station that was based at the hotel.

Yes, Edgewater Beach would be to the left, you can see the fenced in lot in the foreground in front of the tower that is still there today as the garden for Edgewater Beach Apartments...

Also, notice how the street lights in this photo are nearly identical to the ones they put along the paths in the lakefront parks near here...

This thread pleases me. Kudos to all those who are finding these photos. I think I'm falling in love with Chicago because of them.
