Rave reviews for ‘a very distinguished building’

Ankrom Moisan Architects’ design for a 21-story mixed-use tower in Goose Hollow won unanimous approval from the Portland Design Commission on Thursday, clearing the way for construction adjacent to the Artists Repertory Theatre.

The ART Tower project sailed through design review after two previous design advice hearings. Commissioners rejected a condition of approval suggested by Bureau of Development Services staff that would have required balconies on the building’s north side. The south side will still have balconies.

Commissioners were complimentary of the project, which features a clean, simple design from Ankrom Moisan Architects.

“This building from the beginning has had such a beautiful concept,” Commissioner Zari Santner said. “I think it’s going to be a very distinguished building.”
...continues at the DJC (temporarily unlocked).

Boy, I like it. I love how the increasing number of windows per segment draw the eyes upward. I assume the blue accents are just typical fantasy rendering silliness that won't happen in real life, which is a shame since they look great. But still, I like this a lot. And is the white actually brick? That would be fantastic. I love the top story too.

I'd love to see things like this built downtown - but putting it on this spot will be wonderful. Such good things are going to be happening in Goose Hollow. Hooray for that.

Presumably ground breaking means the partial demolition of the Artists Rep building?

Indeed, the press release did not define the meaning of "ground breaking." Since the corporation was confident enough to issue a release, I presume that there is actual forward progress on the horizon.

The permit for the tower is now "Approved to Issue". Does know if the demo of the north portion of the Artists Rep has happened yet?

I passed by ART's Alder St side on Saturday, and the north half is nearly all demolished already.

Is the red crane in the background of this post the ART tower crane?
