I'm glad you like it. Scetchup can be pretty addicting once you get a handle on it. You should try it if you haven't already, its pretty easy. Love your drawings btw. That particular Drury Plaza provided by Sketchup is measured at 346 ft tall to the tip of the antenna. My building would be less than 2 1/2 times that size. It may have been the angle of the photo that made it look not to scale, so here's another.

focOneRepublicCenter15 by Fireoutofclay, on Flickr

As far as Hemisfair Park, I started making a series of 5 additional themed towers of varying heights within the park. Each tower is supposed to represent a "flag" over Texas. The largest reaches 1836ft; I call it "The Heart of Texas". But even for a fantasy rendering it was getting kind of ridiculous. And since Hemisfair is actually being redeveloped in real life, I see no need to "compete" with reality. I am working on a pavilion going over Market Street that could complement the current master plan. But hey, if you have some ideas that you wouldn't mind sharing, I wouldn't mind taking to time to create something for you using your ideas.

I really like this one. It's simple but it fits because it's not a cookie cutter beige building.

Maybe you should talk with the guys at Overland who are redrafting the hotel for the Joske's building.

I don't know every single detail of this project and am not pretending to, but IMO, it seems that Midland would be better served by building 2 or 3 separate buildings on those two city blocks as opposed to having a skyscraper island. I get the whole "building the showpiece" part of this, but to me, that seems to be setting up a mirage for Midland.

Thanks World. I appreciate that. I thought that my designs were decent enough to be used as placeholders at the very least. And after seeing the initial design for that Joskes hotel, I know they are. I'll put up another design this week if I can finish it.

I wasn't that much of a fan of the old Presidio Tower. To each his own.

I doubt any high rise buildings will come to be on account of the HDRC strict standards. It's a shame to see Austin Bypassing us in this area.

Runner, I don't think the HDRC is as big of a blockage as you're making it out to be. There is room for some general grievances with them, but it's really the economics of building vertical that don't shake out in SA right now.

It's probably been said a million times on the forum: Austin has a completely different economy; more higher wage jobs thanks to IT and more single people thanks to UT. Those two things work better for high rise living. When their downtown boom started 13 years ago I'd bet their land prices were cheaper than ours are now (anyone know for sure?) and that plays a big role too in creating critical mass.

Instead of complaining about our lack of cranes or Austin's oversupply, lets promote SA and encourage every local we meet to get the best education/job they can and to move downtown. High wages + high demand = high rises.

Tricentennial Pavilion

Market Street from Alamo to Riverwalk Bridge/ Convention Center

55' Tall / 740' Long / 22' Clearance

Public / Private Use, Rental, convention space , Car Shows, Fashion Shows, etc. Decreases pedestrian congestion on street, provides direct link between Convention Center and Rivercenter Mall. Could be a light rail stop, entrance for parking garage under park. It would be a great addition for our city's Tricentennial.

a more enclosed version:

*I just became aware of this park! Right on, very similar to what I had envisioned. I should add more landscaping...

I really like that one. Although I'd provide more shade on top of it as 100 degree weather is just terrible after about 10 minutes.

Thanks Jaga. Yeah I hear you. At least during the summer months, I can see something seasonal like colored shade screening nets or something similar. Alot can be done with this. It can be really decked out during Christmas time, make a cool art platform for Luminaria, and a great place to watch the fireworks displays.

Frost Bank Tower (Old Rendering)

New Frost Bank Corporate Headquarters - 612ft

Houston / Camaron / Travis / Flores

Frost Bank Headquarters 17 by Fireoutofclay, on Flickr

Yes, it is an OLD rendering, just re-posting in light of the news that this might actually happen. It happens to be located at the same location that the new building that is currently being proposed. But don't worry, I'm sure Weston's building will be far superior. Just please please please don't cut those oak trees!!!

I personally hope he chooses Michael G Imber's office to design it.

I had a lot of fun with this one. I gave the old version a spit shine, strayed from the usual earth tones, and added an obelisk to the top. I also updated the old rendering to match the max height given by Weston, although I know its not written in stone. It does have a bird reference at angles like the Frost in Austin (not sure if that's a bad thing). I'm thinking that the parking garage might be too small, so I suggest that there are a few parking levels underground for VIPs and such.

Since it is going to be a bank I'd figure I could incorporate some elements from the one dollar bill.

Pyramid.
All-seeing eye
Eagle (OK that kinda just happened, a happy accident)
Arrows
