Here's a couple more low-quality, scanned images. Two 'vintage' Salt Lake City postcards, circa late 1980's:

card from the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau

card from Mountain West Prints, photo by Steve Greenwood

The first card is pre-One Utah Center. The second card is One Utah Center, under construction. Sharp eyes will see it's crane, and incomplete cladding. The elusive Salt Palace Arena is even slightly visible.

I think that without the wells fargo building our skyline looks extremely lopsided. The fact that it the north end is uphill from the south end doesn't help either. All the taller buildings should be to the south to balance it out. lol, lets zone the south end so that you can only build 500+ feet.

I found one!

Sorry for the low image quality. I dug up a pic of One Utah Center off of the Mark One Steel website (providers of the 4150 tons of steel ! ). I had to do a little image enhancement via GIMP to even get it to this quality.

I wonder if anyone can find some pics of the Beneficial Life aka Gateway Tower West being built ? Keep em coming

There is a stock bit of footage that is used in some LDS Church videos that is an aerial helicopter shot zooming in toward and flying over the temple. It shows the Benefitial Life tower under construction:

Sorry for the terrible quality, this is just a screenshot from a youtube video, maybe I can eventually get a better copy of it from a DVD at home.

It is to my understanding that there was suppose to have been a twin? Correct?

I remember reading the RFP for the land One Utah is on in a ULI Magazine. I thought it had mentioned a second structure.

True. Them using a name like ONE Utah center makes it seem like there would of been more then one building.

We take what we can get ! Nice one, arkhitektor.

Is it just me, or does anyone else have to *f o r c e* the phrase "Beneficial Life Building" when looking at "The Building Formerly Known As Gateway Tower West"? How about "Key Bank" when looking at that 351 foot box on State Street? I still struggle with the Kennecott Bldg...oops...Gateway Tower East...oops, Zions Bank Building. And the University Club Bldg, er, uhhh...136 E South Temple. And the Continental Bank Bldg...d'oh...Hotel Monaco. Anyone else remember other building name changes?

ONE Utah Center is that ONE coppertop building...yeeeaah, let's go with that...

Does anyone else remember the RDA nonsense and 40+ story tower 600-700 footer that was supposed to go in the center of Block 57 aka Gallivan Plaza?
I have to say that I'm much happier with the current setup, regardless of the lesser height. My ancient memory is telling me that a company named Lincoln...Savings & Loan or Development...or sumpin'...tried to develop it, and failed? I should've saved the newspaper clippings.

One place I saw a picture where you could see the Beneficial Life Tower (Gateway Tower West) being built was at Starbucks in the base of the Marriott on 200 S and State. It's not too great, but it's still pretty sweet.

And as far as building name changes goes, I can think of a couple:

US Bank Tower. Formerly the Wells Fargo building.

Wells Fargo Tower. Formerly the America Stores Tower.

Wasn't the Radisson the Holiday Inn?

Building name changes have been /become quite common across the Country. Some of the buildings in Manhattan are still referred to by thier original names. Maybe after a few years, people will catch on to the new names.

Don't even get me started on the name changes of Hotels. The Hilton on W. Temple alone has been roughly four different names that I can remember.
It opened as a Sheraton, then Red Lion, then DoubleTree now Hilton.

I think it will take us a year or two to adjust to calling it the Chase Tower rather than the One Utah.

I feel the same way. That is why I am trying to refer buildings by there address rather than its actual name, however too many addresses to remember. There are buildings in which their street address is the name of the building...

Library?

So, does anyone have any pictures of the new Library being built? I've just known it to be there since I've taken an immense interest in Salt Lake City, and I'd like to see the construction on it/

It'll take me longer than that, since they haven't changed the name. The last time I walked by it-just a couple weeks ago- it is still branded One Utah Center at street level.

I heard Lynn Randolph (Weather, KSL 5) say "Let's take a look outside from our camera on the Delta Center."

Yeah, Energy Solutions wasted their money. It'll be Delta Center forever.
