Cool Austin | Travis Co. Courthouse | 239' Feet | 13 Floors | Complete

I'm not sure 13-story Austin buildings are worthy of their own threads any more. But here it is:

Here's a little better rendering.

Sounds like it'll be 3/4 of that block.

13 floors is an odd number considering many buildings don't have a "13th" floor.

Also pretty far from the current Travis County Justice Center, you would think that they would want to have it close by for convenience.

Maybe there isn't a 13th floor. The top two floors could be 12 and 14.

Me too. It seems better than what we knew about the previous proposal on the Republic site.

It's not bad looking and is the right size for that area. My concern is that the county will outgrow this building in a few decades. I think they should build the civil courts here and find another location for the family courts and related family court functions. Does anybody know whether there will be a bond issue to go to the voters related to this building? I got the impression that the county requested a build-to-suit proposal from developers. Does that mean the county will lease the building from the developer in such a way that it does not incur any bonded indebtedness in the construction of the building?

Really sad they made it in an old model of non-neighborhood-interactive courthouse.
Looks like there is no restaurants, etc. to make up for killing D and D. That means it will be a dark block after 5. Same concerns I had before with the design.
Hate that.

The look is decent.
Glad there are al least some public place spaces and hope they actually make the green spaces happen on the upper floors.
That will make up a tiny bit from the top of the hills that I will no longer see.

Those cutouts sure are popular. Almost as popular as notches on towers.

It looks decent. With it being 13 floors for an office building, especially a courthouse, I wouldn't be surprised if it's at least 200 feet. Based on the rendering, it seems to have pretty high ceilings.

I think its quite nice. It certainly will be the new shiny kid on the block. For security reasons, I wouldn't think they'd want it to be too open to the public. That section of town never really seemed to be much of random destination unless you had business to attend to or needed a place to park. More of a segway to points north and south. Its not a terribly attractive area. All in all, this will be the most attractive thing in that section of dt.

Do you know of any courthouses that are actually neighborhood interactive? I'm genuinely asking because as an attorney, I haven't yet seen one anywhere in Texas. Usually the best you can hope for is something like our Federal courthouse, which looks nice enough that you ignore the fact that it's a ghost town on weekends.

I don't actually...
Which is exactly why I wish there was a rethink!
Seems like it's time!

I'm gonna try this again. Does anybody know whether Travis County plans to issue bonds to build this new court house, or are they planning to negotiate a long term lease with the selected "builder/developer" of the project? The press release only provides vague details about any of this. Supposedly Hunt Develpment Group is charged with "putting up land for the project and providing a building meeting the County’s performance specifications". I am probably reading between the lines here, but it seems possible that the county is going to try to get this new courthouse without issuing any bonds since a long term lease (99 years?) would get the job done with a whole lot less cost up front. Has Travis County provided more specifics about the financial arrangements regarding this project?

Passed PC tonight. Commissioners awarded the P3 and they are ready to go. The current building as most of you know is too small, no waiting room for children, no new tech for trials. The one on Block 23 was to have retail but this one won't because of the commissioners need to keep the budget within check (not a great answer but it is what it is). Perhaps if there was community outcry that at minimum the corners were activated...

The County decided against another bond referendum this time around since the one for new courthouse Ver 1 failed.
