Jacksonville used to be a quiet little Navy town through which I-95 passed without much local traffic. Then it annexed all of Duval County and began to grow in spite of being so far north in Florida that the winter weather can be chilly and the summer weather as insufferably hot as the rest of the deep south without the peninsular oceanic influence. Now its a traffic-choked mess made up mostly of carpet-bagger suburbs and enclaves of snowbird Canadians who think its tropical.

I drove throught Jacksonville a couple of times going down to Orlando via I-95. After the marathon of South of the Border signs previously. BTW, South of the Border is not all its cracked up to be, but you'll run into a 1000 signs in South Carolina for it.

Any who... usually my speedometer does not go high enough to clear Jacksonville expediently. The place doesn't appeal to me.

Is Jacksonville the most overlooked big city in Florida?

Overshadowed by Miami - Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa - St. Pete, probably even Panama City/Daytona Beach with the college kids - spring breakers.

It's like 800 square miles making it one of the largest geographically sized cities in the US.

I just went there once to attend Rockville (not gonna miss Limp Bizkit's hometown show). Very small and quiet place, I remember the downtown area being dead although it was 10 pm.

Jacksonville, Florida.

Take note of the St. Johns river in the back drop behind all those skyscrapers, it goes straight out to the Atlantic.

Jacksonville
Hey, this actually made me L O L

I was born on Cecil Field base in Jacksonville and lived there for around 8 years. As a kid, it was good living. Plenty of woods to play in, always looking for 'gators' and ants the size of hamsters. It actually started my journey towards becoming an urban/skyscraper junkie. My dad took me to the opposite side of the river, and I remember looking at the downtown skyline just in awe. I can almost pinpoint that moment where I fell in love with cities.

Let's talk about what you people really want to talk about...

AND that is ants.

Ants are a proud peoples. They build huge colony's, and on schedule. There is no such thing as a NIMBY ant. They all live to serve their dear leader, the Queen, who sits inside her colony chamber, watching the ant version of Oprah, and pumping out more ants. She's a stay-a-home mom.

On the topic of transit, ants build giant tunnels and some colony's form massive highways. There are no lights, and the ant highway moves smoothly even though they all tailgate each other. And there was never in the history of history an ant-gate. The Queen never stopped traffic on the ant highway.

Ants are an imperialistic society. Often waging war on other ants who are part of the Quees "Axis of Evil". Incorporating these conquered colonies into their empire.

Density wise, ants live in co-ops with maximum FAR and unit counts. There is no height limit with ants, and no fear of shadows. All ant colony's are LEED Platinum certified.

I visited Jacksonville once.

It's not a bad city, but definitely forgettable. There are worse places to live / visit.

Funny you mention this, when I flew into Nashville in July and took a ride to the suburbs, I could not get over the sounds of the bugs. I felt like I was in Jurassic Park. I forgot how it was back there.

Very cool, btw. Just amazed at the sounds.

Jacksonville would benefit from an upgrade by renaming itself MichaelJacksonville, IMHO. Build a mockup village that incloods bits of Gary Indiana burbs, Motown stages, and Neverland theme park elements à la Orlando. I haven't been able to get enuf of the disneyfied aspects of cities.

My Navy ship was homeported in Mayport near Jacksonville Beach. We mostly stayed in the beaches area. Once we headed downtown to watch a pro wrestling event. Gorgeous George Junior was getting ready for his match when the old guy seated behind us went crazy and attacked George's "Valet". I felt sorry for the old guy's wife who was crying as the cops dragged him away.

Ahhh, fun times.
