I do have a chunk of terra cotta from the facade of the Childs Building that I use as a doorstop.

I have the ionic capitals from the Nanton Bldg at Portage and Main tucked away in a crawl space. We removed them with a crane along with carrera marble washroom partitions from the Childs. They made a great board room table after being repolished...

The Capitals are available to anyone with a meaningful project...

On the Childs Building, it was really easy to get to the top via the back fire escape. Several nights, in the early 1980s, we clambered up. Great views! We were usually drinking beer and watching the Dub Rifles at the Royal Albert before our urban alpinism. Never caught. Yes, Albert Street was pretty good in the 1980s, with the Wellington in the basement of the St. Charles as a hard-core punk mecca and the Albert with more eclectic stuff. Celebrated blues jam every Saturday at the Albert with Big Dave McLean, Hound Dog (Brent Parkin, Danny Casavant, et al) and the young Colin James, then known as Colin Munn. Before Corydon took off in the 1990s, that's where the action was.

I would remind you that the statute of limitations for improper ascension of a fire egress assemblage was recently increased to 38 years.

Yes you were quite the collector back in the day. I remember when you got those. Unfortunately there's not much left to tear down, so it won't be as easy for the next generation.

Trees are all gone. Light fixtures are the same still. Love that there's a Shell gas station there.

Maybe Shell had offices in the building that the sign sat on, but there was no Shell station there.

Thanks for that. I was really speculating that maybe it was in this spot and should have stated that:

Certainly the sign was in the right place.

^ The sign was actually at Portage and Main... when you see photos from other vantage points you can see what I mean. I think all the signage contributed to a vibrant urban environment... I don't get why planners cracked down on them so much.

CJQM ... "quality music"! Later CFRW, now known as TSN 1290.

I see it now. That sign is actually on a building on the west side of Main St.

The present light fixtures only date back to the Glen Murray regime. It was a great idea to bring them back.
