It’s unique, as far as I know. But it is such an ingrained rule that to use the abbreviation looks and feels wrong. Otherwise the word would rarely be written out in full when referring to place names in English. It’s generally slightly pretentious to do so.

No. The governments of NB and Canada have slowly be transitioning place names over to the full-form Saint. Things like the St. John River, which runs from Saint John to Northern Maine, was renamed to Saint John River, as an example.

Because it differentiates Saint John, NB from St. John's, NL. I find this is less commonly done by francophones, partly due to the translation factor (St-John & St-Johns) and partly due to the plethora of St-place names in QC. When Saint John and St. John's both joined the QMJHL at the same time one was abbreviated SNB and the other SNL, as an example of this.

It is common to hear “Saint-Jean, Nouveau-Brunswick” in French but I find that St.John’s is only rarely translated to “Saint-Jean de Terre-Neuve” in everyday conversations. Maybe it is just my personal experience. I know Radio-Canada says “Saint-Jean de Terre-Neuve” and I can’t help but find that strange. Maybe because I know the region is all but francophone so I find that translation a bit much.

They broke ground on this three years ago in Oakville. Not much has been built since from what I can tell when I drive by every once in a while.

I can remember three mosques now that seem to take forever to build. It's as if they build as much as they can until funds run dry. Raise some more funds then build again until it runs out. And repeat the process until it's finally done.

^ That's a peculiar-looking building... was it purpose-built as a church or adapted from some other use?

Ya, when I clicked on the website to cite the image I noticed a bunch of Brazilian stuff on there.

My first thought is that it was re-purposed. But I noticed some pics of their other churches and they have some other zany looking buildings.

Notre-Dame-des-Champs Church
Repentigny, QC (suburb of Montreal)

It was built in 1962-1963 and designed by Roger d'Astous, an acclaimed church architect. Because of its shape, Notre-Dame-des-Champs has earned the nickname "La Sacoche" ("the Handbag") amongst the neighbours.

^Lots of interesting things going on and lots of ugly as well. What's with the rock star parking in the front?

I was going to say the same thing.

Lots of pretty accents here and there but too much of it looks like a fortified bunker.

Lol. True. There must be 10 different types of windows. And love the vertical stripes.

That's an ugly butt mosque, guys.

If the Muslims had any issue, it's been a lack of modern education and innovation.

Most of them can't even read their freaking Quran, if that's even any religious book, and they think Christianity wants to harm them.
They're scared of crosses... Yes, that same cross they used to crucify who you know.

I think we should think about that twice.
