Five-storey expansion continuing in Charlottetown for The Mount private school, seniors apartments

The Guardian:

It may be March, but that hasn’t halted work on The Mount Continuing Care Community’s building expansion project.

Construction on the new 70,000-square-foot expansion began in late November. Once it opens, it will be the new home for the Mount Academy private school currently located in the caring facility.
The Mount’s owner Paul Jenkins said the academy will be able to accommodate 150 students and six to eight classrooms once it moves into the new space. He said the school area is expected to be ready by September while another part of the project – 18 apartment units – is expected to be ready by January.

The building is five storeys with a basement. Charlottetown city council approved the project in the fall.

Besides the space for the Mount Academy, the plan also involves 16 nursing care units and parking spaces. A swimming pool was originally planned, but Jenkins said that area will be turned into a staff room and tenant storage instead. The existing Mount building has a swimming pool.

The steel framework is being done by Borden-Carleton’s MacDougall Steel Erectors Inc. The exterior is going to be brick, but Jenkins noted the brick will be chocolate brown in colour –

a different colour than the existing Mount.

Jenkins wouldn’t say how much the project cost, other than to say “a building with a steel frame and a brick exterior isn’t cheap.”

Thanks for posting. It's good to keep up with happenings in the "old home place".

Is the Mount Academy a religious private school? Given it's location, I could see it being Catholic.

The old Sisters of St Martha are all gone. The building was sold, renovated and transformed into a seniors living/care facility. The new Mount Academy is a non-denominational private school. There is no religious affiliation.
The new building was quite a surprise when the steel started to go up. There was some opposition to the project but any issues were addressed. Can't wait to see the final result.

Here are some more ongoing projects in Charlottetown.

The old North River rink is no more. It was torn down last fall and the new land will be used for improved access for the North River Fire Dept. I believe they will also be improving the access of York Point Rd to Capital Drive.
There also has been some development across the road in the form of the three floor apartment building. It was recently completed and soon to have a finished parking lot when the asphalt is being made again.

O'Hallaran apartments on Passmore Street

This is the first of two similar buildings. Note the sign for the facade look.

I'll answer my own question. The light poles are being put up and as I heard, they waiting for a crane from the mainland.

Chesapeake Haven, a 60-unit seniors apartment building on Malpeque Road in Charlottetown

Bill and Kathy McInnis are the owners and developers of the Chesapeake brand apartments across the province.
His construction crew is literally building the roof all by itself on the site of what will eventually be a four-storey, 60-unit high-end seniors apartment complex.
The building will also feature underground parking for 55 units.
Bill’s daughter, Melody, is in charge of filling the units with people.

“I do all the rentals (for our properties) like renting this building as it goes up, and we’re over half full at this stage already,’’ Melody said of the Malpeque Road property that will be called Chesapeake Haven.

Kathy McInnis said the demand is there.

Across from Moore Well Drilling on Malpeque Road. It has been under construction for a couple of months now.

I believe this is the first of 2 buildings.

Re: Pan American Properties Application to build a 5 storey, 79 unit condo

Zoning Bylaw Amendment – Pan American Properties Inc.

Second reading and adoption of a zoning bylaw amendment, as modified by Council, to rezone a portion of parcel number 327973 from the Waterfront Mixed Use Zone (WMU) to the Waterfront Residential Zone (WR), and to rezone a portion from the Waterfront Public Space Zone (WPS) to the Waterfront Residential Zone (WR) was approved. This follows 1st reading which took place at a special Town Council Meeting held on February 28, 2018. Pan American Properties Inc. now have the ability to apply for a permit to construct their proposed apartment building.

Subdivision Lot – Michael Thomas Way

"Council granted preliminary subdivision approval to an application (SD016-2017) from Pan American Properties to subdivide 1 lot (Lot E, approx. 1.21 acres) from parcel number 327973 (approx. 7.6 acres) located on the Southport Motel property along the extension of Michael Thomas Way".

This a start!

$15M development planned for Montague

Waterfront complex initiative comes from Montague Economic Development Corporation

The Montague Economic Development Corporation is looking for developers interested in partnering to build a $15-million apartment complex on the waterfront.

Wharfside will have 44 apartments in a four-storey building, with underground parking and 9,000 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. A second two-storey complex would be built closer to the water.

That Montague development is insane, hopefully it will revitalize the downtown area because it's been dull and fairly empty for years. We've owned a cottage in Brudenell for 6 years and I believe we've only ever walked down Main St. once because it was so boring. Now if only Georgetown could do something similar- I remember them talking about trying to woo cruise ships but nothing ever came out of it.

And to take a jab at Moncton, check out the plan, a 3 story parking garage- in a town with a population of 2127!

(Oops, I see that was what MonctonRad meant too. )
