Wallace Quarries helping to build Canada, the Maritimes one block at a time
BILL SPURR

When you provide 10 above-average paying jobs in a community the size of Wallace and you’ve lived there all your life, everyone knows you, even on the days you haven’t sealed the biggest business deal of your career.

So when Tom Flynn, president and owner of Wallace Quarries, arrives for lunch at McMahon’s takeout, he gets interrupted several times before he gets through his club sandwich and lemon meringue pie.

Flynn is the fourth generation of his family to work at the quarry that opened 150 years ago, and he took over ownership from his father. Flynn’s dad re-opened the quarry in the mid-1980s, after a move by builders and architects to cheaper precast concrete put sandstone out of style for two decades. But Tom is the one who negotiated the deal with Armour Group to have sandstone from Wallace clad the Queen’s Marque building now under construction on the Halifax waterfront.

Awesome to hear that Wallace sandstone will be on Queen's Marque. Actually, if I recall correctly, I do believe staff wanted to make that a requirement on the site as part of the approvals and the developer pushed back and got their way. Glad to see they're doing it anyways.

Attachment A, with the conditions that:
a) the southern portion of the Lower Water Street streetwall be articulated with an upper
storey streetwall stepback;
b) all flat rooftops, which are generally inaccessible to the building’s occupants, be
landscaped with roof tolerant vegetation; and
c) the sandstone bar be clad with Wallace sandstone;

2. Approve twelve of the thirteen identified variances to the Land Use By-law requirements, as
contained in Attachment D; the only exception being the variance request for maximum streetwall
height along the southern portion of the Lower Water Street frontage;
3. Accept the findings of the quantitative Wind Impact Assessment, as contained in Attachment E; and

4. Recommend that the Development Officer accept the provision of publicly accessible amenity or
open space, the provision of public art, and the provision of exemplary sustainable building
practices as the post-bonus height public benefit for the development.
It was the first time I had heard of Wallace sandstone.

If you look at old pictures of the waterfront, or the few intact historical parts today, one nice feature that adds a lot to the unique feel is the relatively fine-grained pattern of buildings and hemmed in open space. Queen's Marque is going to have a large footprint but based on this photo it looks like it'll restore that feel to this area, which was completely destroyed when the land was cleared for parking.

Another aspect of this site is that it ties together two separate relative cohesive chunks of waterfront. The whole of the Prince Street axis will be filled in too, aside from one little parking lot by Market Steet. It'll be a big change from a few years ago when it felt like you couldn't go more than a couple of blocks without running into a big parking lot downtown.
