Structure set to be the tallest building in the world

Saudi investment company Kingdom Holding is approaching more contractors for the deal to design and build its planned 1-kilometre-tall Kingdom Tower in Jeddah.

In September, Kingdom Holding had shortlisted three contracting groups for the deal. They were South Korea’s Samsung Corporation with Dubai-based Arabtec Construction, Australia’s Multiplex, and the Saudi Binladin Group.

Contractors had expected the contract to be awarded within weeks, but according to sources close to the project the developer now wants to consider additional proposals from other contracting groups that may offer a lower price.

Kingdom had also shortlisted various consultancy groups in September. They were the US’ Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, and US-based Pickard Chilton in partnership with UK-based Hyder Consulting (MEED 11:9:09).

If Kingdom Holding goes ahead with the ambitious project, it will replace the 818-metre Burj Dubai as the world’s tallest building.

The Capital Market Authority is also planning a smaller high-rise project at the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh.

It is prequalifying contractors to build a 400-metre-high headquarters building. This structure will be higher than the 309-metre Kingdom Tower, currently the tallest building in Riyadh

Oct 22, 2010 3:01 PM GMT+0800

* World's tallest tower part of $20 bln project in Jeddah

* Plans another project in Riyadh valued at $6.67 billion

Kingdom Holding Co. has awarded the design contract for its mile-high Kingdom Tower in Jeddah to Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture, Dubai-based Gulf News reported, citing an official it did not identify.

The development of the tower is being managed by Emaar Properties PJSC, the United Arab Emirates’ biggest real-estate company by market value, the newspaper said, citing the official. Emaar is the developer of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest tower and which the Kingdom Tower will overtake.

Adrian Smith designed Burj Khalifa when he was working for Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Gulf News said.

These are from May of this year. Altin did say it was a 3 lobed design that was chosen ...

Could it be the KT design ?

Draw your own conclusion ...

I could certainly live with this if it turns out to be the KT design.
Discussion ... thoughts ...?

In August 2011, the Chicago-based project architect Gill Gordon commented that groundbreaking was expected toward the end of 2011. You have to be an optomist to design something like this.

Resemblence to Wright's design for the mile-high Illinois Tower is undeniable.

Being a mile up, now wouldn"t the differences in air temp be a real problem, super hot at the base and cooler at the top, the thermal differences I would think would be massive, besides the wind shear this sucker would have to take. All though it would be empty as we all know these Kings build these just to up the other. So I am sure another Oil baron if this is built will top it as well lol. Hate to ever see a war in the middle east as these would be very east targets.

Would be great to see a construction update on this. Sounds pretty interesting. Humanity's first tower to break the kilometer mark.
