^ I was actually wondering the same thing. They appeared over night it seems. So I guess the construction worker guy I talked to was right. Give or take 1 week or 2, the site did start to get more interesting.

Not an expert on construction, but I think it's for a crane. Looks like they're setting up a second one on the other side of the pit.

They do appear to be the size - and location - for crane bases, though the site will likely need more than 2 cranes. It's weird that the crane bases - if that's what they are - necessitated drilling and installing 6 piles each. I've never seen a crane base get foundation piles.

A foundation base with six pillas for a crane? Nah..

That would be a surprise. I never saw something like that before and that is the side for the 19 story building.

Confirmed that they are crane bases. First one is in place on the left hand side, next to where the taller condo tower will go.

They started the pour at 7 this morning. There appeared to be no rebar on the ground in this area prior to the pour.

^^^ Yeah this is the weirdest construction site I've ever viewed. Random concrete pours, solid foundations for cranes even before the buildings foundations were set into place. Maybe this is a new method of construction ?

Hm.. it is weird, yes.

I guess we will see more concrete tomorow.
That shouldn't be the whole foundation.

In the Central City thread, colemonkee says that the thin layer of concrete poured yesterday is intended to prevent moisture from seeping into the foundation. Clark Construction did something very similar with the Federal Courthouse.

This is method is fairly common. At least here in the Mid-Atlantic.

I worked on a couple of projects where we have poured a mud-mat; in order to provide a stable and flat surface for assembly of the floating-foundation rebar cage.

They're adding more sections to the crane towers today.

That was purely speculation on my part, but educated speculation. They also put up a sort of shotcrete solution along the wood shoring walls - also not something we see a lot of in Southern California - earlier in the week, so that was part of the reason for my speculation. The concrete that was poured was clearly not structural in nature - you can see how thin it is if you zoom in - so forming some kind of protective membrane to prevent or slow water intrusion is the only purpose I could surmise it might have. There is a relatively high water table in parts of downtown (precisely why Spring Street has it's name), so this may be what's going here as well.

I am from Germany and I moved to L.A. 1 year ago.
This method is fairly uncommon to me (even so I watched a few US-projects rising), but I am here to learn new things.

The left crane is rising now..

They're working on Saturdays now, they used to be dead on the weekends.
