The latest brilliant proposal by by Quebec's separatist government (headed by Pauline Marois) called the charter of Quebec values

the racist bovine in question
more fun and games in Mr. John's hood, a hair salon was firebombed last night, I guess someone didn't like their haircut
an update featuring more protests against the "charter of Quebec values"
Listen to Floyd... Floyd has all the answers
Very interesting. Can you provide a little information on what prompted this? Just looking at the pics I would think the politician lady is more so an atheist or agnostic than a racist. And are those cosplay people a part of the same demonstration?
I´ve liked the people shots at that protest against Pauline Marois and her policy. I can observe many religions living together in Montreal, is this causing any coexistence problem in Québec?
Your first pictures in this thread of Montreal are very nice. I´ve always liked Montreal´s skyline.
Funny thing is that hair salon's name is Coupe foudre; a play on words from the expression "coup de foudre" which in french means "struck by lightning" in relation to "falling in love".
ChiTownCity, I can attempt my own explanation about the "religious accomodations debacle" that this proposed law has promoted. Four or five years ago, a debate about accomodating religious holidays in the workplace, prayer rooms for muslim students in schools and segregated hours for women and men in public swimming pools became political. A commission on "reasonable accomodations" chaired by mmsrs Bouchard and Taylor was set up to examine the question and whether or not general rules should exist to guide public sector decision makers in dealing with demands by religious folk. The orthodox jewish population in Montreal is very visible and powerful, it has had run-ins with folks in
parts of town where boys were exposed to ladies doing exercises in sexy outfits at a YMCA, and rabbis asked the director to blind the windows of their building. That created a scandal of sorts in the "general population".
The result is a very divisive and unwarranted bill by the PQ government in need of regional votes (outside Montreal) for the next election. The govt is only a year old and is minority run and unpopular. The law will not pass. The government will be voted out and elections may be called in a couple of months according to some observers.
Quebec has a habit of introducing legislation that imitates french laws in matters of education and civil law. The civil code in Quebec is based on the Napoleonic code, it is not british as in the rest of Canada. While I am not crazy about the hijab or the islamic veil, I dont think it my business to tell a woman not to wear one. Quebec has a very strong feminist component that perceives the hijab as an abomination and a sign of male domination. Heck, I dont like tattoos but who am I to tell someone's death's head ink on a sleeve is illegal in the public sector job market...
