I think tourists will inevitably choose Millennium Park for an ice skating rink, given the photo opps and fame of the bean. Plus, that still leaves an awkward empty space for months at a time whereas Milenium oark just goes back to a nice plaze below the bean. It'd be nice to see a park with a concert venue or something more innovative than another ice skating rink (or even another concert venue).

NBC Tower looks so sexy in B+W like that...nice capture Hayward.

Quick shots from 4/22:

Looks like the tower is just about halfway there!

It's now under construction. They just started on the second floor. There's a small section visible in the lower right hand corner of the first photo.

Fortunately, ParkView East (when built) will hide the parking garage from the park.

Curious on this one. How come the first 10 floors are uneven? Then from the 11th floor amenity deck and above the floors are even. Usually when I see floors like this it's for parking. Though the parking podium is going up next door. Also, on Related's website they list two different heights for this tower. 45 or 47 floors?

Why do I get the impression that this building will blow away the rendering when it's finished. Specifically, I didn't anticipate just how BIG it would be. Hopefully it exceeds my expectations further.

Take a look at this shot and then rendering. The parking podium juts into the building about a third of the way through, then resumes normal floorplates.

...and it's not even halfway up yet!

In related news, I can't wait for that bland parking structure in the foreground to go. That thing is ugly as sin.

^ ParkView East will have subterranean parking. The park is built on top of a garage that's big enough for both buildings (four levels deep, each level is the entire block).

As you can see, preliminary designs for the east tower had no podium:

There ain't nothing going away no more. Everything in that area is now permanent (such as it is) and in fact there's nothing remaining to be demolished anywhere along Illinois or Grand between Navy Pier and the St Clair area. I think what you're talking about is the entrance to ParkView's subterranean parking; that will stay and will get "built around" by ParkView East's podium (just a 2 or 3-story amenity structure visible in the above render). So as consolation, yes, it will be less ugly.

Actually, wait, there is one old structure still waiting to be demolished. It's the old parking lot attendant's booth at 500 LSD...

^^^Technically there is one more empty lot between St. Claire and LSD and Grand and Illinois which is right between the Ronald McDonald House/Optima and the existing Fairbanks Condo building (with the Dominick's in it). It was slated for a taller condo tower and few years ago. Now I don't know of any plans.
