Just the usual, John Cranley trying to sabotage some of Cincinnati's biggest projects.

There has been a lot of drama this week about the proposed 30 story apartment tower at 4th and Race.

Construction kicks off for Taft's Ale House in OTR
Quote:
Over-the-Rhine's rich brewing history marks another milestone Friday as construction begins on Taft's Ale House – transforming an abandoned, historic church building and recalling a famous family's past.

The new three-level brewpub will be housed in the old St. Paul's German Evangelical Protestant Church at 1429 Race St. and include a brewery, three bars and full-service restaurant seating 300.

An official groundbreaking is at 11 a.m. today. It's expected to open this fall.

Major demolition work starts on AT580
Quote:
Signs of significant renovation at the former 580 Building will finally be visible this week as major interior demolition begins on the project that will create 180 apartments in the heart of downtown Cincinnati.

Tony Birkla, partner with Anderson Birkla Investment Partners LLC, said interior demolition of AT580, located at 580 Walnut St., is a pretty big job. Demolition will take place on floors seven through 14 and the entire annex building.

Details of the building’s conversion from office space with some retail to a mixed-use development with upscale apartments, class A office space and retail were revealed in June 2013.

I'm looking at condos across the street from Taft's Ale House and that would be an awesome neighbor to have (in addition to all the other stuff right there).

I'm excited to see work finally starting on @580. That street is great and is only set to improve with this project and the nearby tower at 7th and Broadway (I forget its recently announced official name).

I'm loving how many cranes are showing up around town. There are several up in Uptown at UC and the medical campus. There is the one for Dunnhumby and now the 7th and Broadway tower. And in the near future there will be the one at 4th and Race (which I'm sure will still happen despite the mayor's ill conceived efforts) and phase II of The Banks. Visible signs of progress for those who maybe don't venture into the city much from their workplaces downtown or in Uptown.

Cool Places: Get a sneak peek of the Eden Park brewery

Now is one of the best times to get into the brewing business in Cincinnati, and work is underway to turn the dilapidated Pump Station No. 7 in Eden Park into a production brewery and tap room.

Here's hoping General Electric decides to anchor the proposed office tower at the Banks:

GE eyes Mason, Oakley, Banks for more than 1,000 jobs
Quote:
General Electric Co. is expected to announce a major project as soon as Thursday that would bring more than 1,000 jobs to Greater Cincinnati.

Multiple sources told The Enquirer several sites are under consideration for GE's expansion here and a final decision on where to locate has not been made.

The frontrunners include Mason, Oakley and The Banks development on Cincinnati's riverfront.

GE officials declined comment, but sources outside the company said GE is committed to adding between 1,000 to 2,000 new office jobs.

This is awesome news. 400,000 potential square feet would mean they're probably eyeing the office building as part of Phase II. Though I'd rather see the pad in phase I built on, having an office anchor of this scale will do wonders for The Banks. I'm really hoping they don't go with Mason. Oakley would be an alright option but The Banks would be far more of a game changer. Exciting news.

I suppose that any investment will be an improvement. However, my vote would be to: rip the thing down, build a western plaza for GABP and incorporate the rest of the area into the Riverfront park, and build a new Arena + hotel in the Horseshoe complex.
This could then become a more permanent home for casino centric entertainment (i.e boxing, concerts, final four(s), touring shows like circ du soleil) also be a headquarters and/or ticket center for a theater district/scene that includes the Aronoff and Taft theaters and others.

I played with this a long time ago (probably mentioned it before). looks something like this:

^ I like it! I also wouldn't mind seeing a new arena on the West side of downtown near the convention center.

that rough draft casino layout looks really good dude!

i know you were just spit balling, but i don't know about an arena on the west side of downtown. is there enough space? ease of access? plenty of parking accommodations? i thought there were still plans to expand the convention center as it is anyway.

i'm fine with the arena as it is now as long as we can do it big and do it right some time in the future. do it right the first time, you don't have to do it again. also, we don't want another paul brown stadium fiasco

^ I think things have been resolved. The developer is paying for the relocation of the last business that was holding out. Construction is supposed to get started this summer.

Also, the 300 units at the Banks Phase 2 will start construction by the end of the month, and if General Electric decides to build their new office building at the Banks, there will be a 12-14 story tower going up as well.

Developers are also planning an 18 story apartment tower over the Macy's at Fountain Square.

Downtown tough place for housing
Quote:
Four apartment projects are already under construction in and near Downtown:

• AT580, Sixth and Walnut streets: 179 units when complete later this year.

• Broadway Square, near 12th Street and Broadway: first phase to offer 39 units as soon as year’s end.

• Mercer Commons, Walnut between 13th and 14th streets: second phase is to add 67 units.

• Seven at Broadway, Seventh Street and Broadway: 111 units should be ready in early 2015.

Two other large projects also are in the works:

• Hamilton County officials announced Thursday that construction on 291 apartments planned for west of National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at The Banks, could get underway by the end of the month.

• Work on a luxury high-rise tower at Fourth and Race streets could get started this summer. It won’t be ready until 2015 at the earliest.

Bortz said all those developments are “a drop in the bucket” compared to true demand.

Phase 2 of the Banks ready for construction
Quote:
Construction of Phase IIa of the Banks will start on Monday, according to a news release from a spokeswoman for the developer.

In this phase, master developers Carter and the Dawson Company will build 291 apartments and 20,000 square feet of retail. The nine-story apartment tower will have one- or two-bedroom units.
