Unhappy

Some very disappointing demolitions in this thread. Thank goodness they're saving the corner portion of that Hamilton factory.

The Victoria (South Street) Hospital Campus is in the process of being decommissioned and the first buildings slated for the wrecking ball have been chosen. The area is 5 blocks south of downtown in one of our more troubled neighbourhoods. The campus is very large and sprawls along the banks of the Thames for three blocks. A number of the buildings are being saved for adaptive reuse, but unfortunately the Main Wing and some little outbuildings didn't cut the mustard.

They couldn't have found an empty lot used a gravel parking lot to tear down?

What a beauty of a building, and it's gone...

Although Hamilton is full of huge empty lots, even entire blocks, the owners seem to think they're worth millions more than anyone would ever pay. In the meantime, they're happy to collect parking revenue.

They required a site next to the main downtown transit terminal. In my opinion McMaster did us a favour since the School Board was going to leave the building this year. Either way the School Board was either going to remain vacant in a highly visible area or get demolished to make way for a new project that increased more jobs in the area and helps improve health care delivery for the City.

This beauty is supposed to be going pretty soon. One of the last heritage blocks on South Main.

More senseless destruction in Canada's stupidest city.

There is a proposal to demolish this row of five buildings in Gore Park, the heart of downtown Hamilton. The one on the left has already been demolished. The stone buildings on the right date to the 1840s

If they had public consultations, the public would just say "knock 'em down, and while you're at it, might as well finish the job and get rid of the whole downtown."

The proposal isn't set in stone. They may save the facade.

Here's more detail of two of the buildings in Hamilton's Gore Park that are threatened with demolition. It would be a shame to lose yet another remnant of Hamilton's stone heritage of the mid 19th century.

I didn't know that was such a "troubled" neighbourhood. I thought things didn't start getting kinda shitty until you got into White Oaks. Still, the loss of Victoria Hospital is nothing short of tragic. And shame on you Hamilton, those stone buildings form a vibrant, human-scale retail area and you're going to replace them with Toronto wannabe condos?

Dear GOD this thread depresses me.

Same here...

The city started to demolish the hippodrome to make way for the new arena. In the earlier stage of the project, it was decided that the facade would be preserved and integrated to the design of the new arena. This decision was overturned for two reasons. First, the structure of the hippodrome, which dates back to 1917, had been previously weakened. The second (and real) reason is monetary: it would have been very expansive to reinforce the facade so that it would keep it structural integrity during the construction. Honestly, I would have preferred to see the facade integrated to the new arena in one way or another because it was a beautiful building with great historical relevance...

A stupid move for any city, a surprisingly disgusting one by Quebec. What a fucking shame.

OMG. Couldn't they, oh, I don't know, say build the new arena where the parking lot is? That sucks.

As for this building, it's a very utilitarian unfriendly kind of government structure. Not sad to see it go.
