I don't believe so. The renderings may have been from a feasibility study, the mothballed W Hotel plan from several years back, or it could be something new and the renderings accidentally made on to the engineer's web page (which have since been removed).

There is currently no "public" news or information out there regarding a W Hotel in San Antonio. In fact, W has stated recently that they plan to focus on international growth over the coming years.

Wow that sucks then. Too bad. I would think SA needs more Hotels downtown? Is our tourist industry slipping a bit? I know Austin is building like 4 to 5 new hotels downtown.

The SSA is looking for ideas for expansion. Something like this will create a 4th Arts district in the downtown area, tying in wih the nearby Tobin Center that's nearing completion. Nice!

The historic Ursuline Campus of the Southwest School of Art holds a special place not only within the hearts of the students and faculty, but within San Antonio’s as well. When the SSA issued a call for ideas to make its adjacent Navarro Campus “just as memorable” as the Ursuline Campus, we developed a design that respects the architectural significance of the historic campus while at the same time extending formal characteristics to create a contemporary vision for the future of the school in general and for the Navarro Campus in particular. A former car dealership, the Navarro Campus is disconnected both spatially and physically from the historic campus. Our design endeavors to strengthen their relationship by gesturing the main mass of a new structure towards the historic campus.

Similar to the lines of the groin vaults in Gothic architecture, our design creates a grid shell, or lattice structure, that envelops the existing

Navarro Campus building. The massing of the new structure pays homage to the school’s historic chapel by playing off the gabled geometry and extending it to address surrounding urban context. The lattice's pattern references a woven textile or basket – the figurative and literal creative fabric of the SSA.

Our proposal is not a static formal gesture. Rather, the lattice will be a Living Icon that temporally engages the creative life of the school. Each open cell of the lattice will be filled in, over time, in one of three ways: 1) permanently, whenever a graduate of the newly formed BFA and MFA classes creates a panel; 2) temporarily, as part of an installation or exhibition in which artists create works that engage the structure; and 3) by the creation of donor panels. Some cells will always remain open. As the cells fill in, the communal efforts of the SSA shape the look and feel of the lattice.

That looks really interesting. They should build it so I can take some pictures of it.

No. There are no current plans for a W Hotel San Antonio. Several years back, a local developer floated a plan to bring a W to our fair city. However, those plans fizzled and died. The W is now focusing on international expansion. Therefore, I do not see them looking at SA for at least a few years.

FYI, the W planned for Houston has yet to come to fruition.

Seattle firm, GGN, picked to lead design of new civic park at Hemisfair

Quote
Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN), a Seattle-based landscape architecture firm with international street cred, will design the civic park for Hemisfair. The City of San Antonio approved the contract on Thursday.

The civic park will be one of three new green spaces that will help anchor the transformation of the former World’s Fair site.

Gustafson’s work includes the Lurie Garden at Millennium Park in Chicago; the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial at Hyde Park in London; Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam; Seattle City Hall Plaza; Valencia Parque Central in Spain; and the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
