Trans Canada Highway Twinning: Segments U/C

The Canol road in the Yukon is a good one. Drove from Whitehorse to Ross River one year thinking it would be faster than the recommended route.

At one point I was driving along a beach since it was the only clear route, and some of the climbs were similar to the BC ones.

Drove the main highway back to Whitehorse, it was 150kms further but took me 2 hours less travel time.

in Alberta you may find some back roads on the eastern slopes of the Rockies that tough but the O&G industry keeps the roads in pretty good shape. For main Highways the Forestry Trunk road has some good tough sections.

There is a road in Jasper NP on the North side of the Athabasca river that you can only drive one direction on certain days.

Plan to do a gravel bike ride on it next year.

Specifically the westbound travel lane.

"Failure happens in a second," said El Naggar. "We don't know exactly when this catastrophic scenario will happen."

He said provincial officials need to do something "yesterday" to fix the sinkhole under the highway.

So far the provincial response is "nothing to see here, move along, move along"..............

Looks like I won’t be going to Halifax even if QC completes A85.

They talk about how failure happens in 1 second and how this stretch of highway was built in the 1960's. The chances it will fail while you're driving over it are very low. Far lower than the chance of a more mundane scenario like a car accident.

I’m looking at TCH through Goldstream and Malahat on Vancouver Island. Pretty sure it’s been answered before, but what’s the problem with an EDR from Millstream over the end of Saanich Inlet to south of Malahat (but north of the provincial park where B.C.’s simply reluctant to widen the highway) again?

Elevation change. The top of the Malahat is around 1500m above sea level. Saanich Inlet is at sea level.

Can’t you just wind your way up though? (Edit: I mean, the Old Parks Bridge east of Golden did just that.)

Ps: There seem to be backroads from Goldstream to Duncan. Are they useable?

Just picture a bridge pier that is 1000m high!

There are backroads, but they go too close to the reservoir that Victoria draws from and they don't like anyone get close to it.

Is the inlet that deep?? If not, what I mean is this: Wind the road down to almost sea level, fly over the inlet (aka a bridge), get to the other side, then wind the road back up to join TCH (Island Highway/Malahat Drive, whatever you call it lol).*

You should visit there. Go for a boat ride. You will see that the side of the Malahat Mountain is too steep for a reasonable speed road on the edge. So, the other option of a bridge would make more sense, but then you have the challenge of building a bridge over 1000m high above the inlet.

Yea this is where Google’s terrain map doesn’t do justice, unfortunately.

I did go through the Malahat once back in grade 11 (which is 8 years ago!). All I remember is the prolonged 2-lane section, U-turn spots, that 90-degree turn south of Mill Bay with mountain on one side and river on the other, lots of lights in the wilderness afterward, grain trains in Duncan, and this mall in Nanaimo where I could see the Inland Island Highway high up there.

Maybe next time I visit Vancity again, I’ll rent a car so I can check out all the places that I couldn’t reach by bus.

There are transit buses that go to Duncan.

Some parts of our country are easy to build on. And there are places like this....

Nice dashcam video of the newly opened Cornwall Bypass, on the western fringe of Charlottetown.

It's not divided, but is a "super two", and is a newly constructed segment of the TCH.
