Ground broken for 1,000-room Fairmont Austin hotel

By Shonda Novak
American-Statesman Staff

Officials broke ground today on a $370 million Fairmont convention hotel in downtown Austin that they say will be the largest in the luxury brand’s portfolio to date.

The Fairmont Austin hotel will rise 37 stories at East Cesar Chavez and Red River street and add 1,066 rooms to the market when it opens in June 2017. It joins another convention hotel under construction, the nearby JW Marriott that will have 1,012 rooms and is due to open in February at Congress Avenue and East Second Street.

I drove by the site today out of total impulse. It has the signs up with pics that make it look much better then these renderings! Those curvy renderings were crazy nice. I wasn't sure of the the buildings orientation prior to the pic by Kevin. But least it has the buildings fat side from the N to S direction. It won't block nice views of other buildings. And this locale DT is a no mans land of development!

What a total and complete downgrade.

This thing was downsized and value engineered into a really lackluster project.

Meh

I was expecting more from Fairmont. This final design is pretty much identical to the Four Seasons and the JW Marriott. I'm grateful that Fairmont's largest US property is coming to Austin and all, I was just expecting something more than... 37 story block of glass. Meh.

It's the new Austin hi-rise design.

Entire block podium about 5-6 stories high with a 30 story tower rising on the back of the block running the entire length and about 1/4th of the width.

See:

Four Seasons
W Hotel
JW Marriot
Ashton

I guess the Hilton has an L shaped tower rising out of the whole block podium.

^ Nice pretty pic and it looks like its making a nice presence on the right side of the skyline.

Too bad that Texas's sister capitol city in California hasn't done some buildings of this caliber..

I find it hilarious that Texas and California are similar in so many respects:

Both have two megacities (LA+Inland Empire and the Bay Area versus DFW and Houston) and each have two second tier cities (ATX and San Antonio versus San Diego and Sacramento), with a smattering of medium and smaller sized cities that are decaying, and a rural area mostly composed of desert, ranching, and farming.

The only thing California has that Texas doesn't? Forests and significant mountain ranges. The one thing Texas has that California doesn't have? Naturally occurring palm trees.

California has palm tree species native to the region. Texas has forests. This isn't a dick-measuring contest.
