winnipegURBAN [100+ pics]

i'm on reading week, wasn't working or doing homework today so i decided to go for a stroll around downtown at around 2pm.. temp was -12c which is downright tropical in these parts after the winter we've had so far this year! this thread mostly hits the exchange warehouse district, portage ave, some obscur back alleys, and a couple from the forks area. it ain't all pretty but i wanted it that way! enjoy =)

elgin ave:

market st:

john hirsch way:

bannatyne ave:

rorie st:

mcdermott ave:

bannatyne again:

frosty windows on mcdermott:

portage&main vicinity:

it wasn't windy anywhere else but in between these buildings where it was like a wind VORTEX of -50 or something..

now south and west to around between graham and portage aves:

playing with some contrast..

holy trinity church grounds:

looks like someone had a good time dumpster diving..

the met theatre.. which is poised for redevelopment =)

you could see the lights were on inside so something was probably happening..

new mb hydro building.. we'll focus a few shots on her:

asian cuisine interlude:

view from top of edmonton st parkade:

my ride back down:

normal parkade happenings:

graham ave storefronts:

catching the bus at the bay dept. store:

streetscene on portage ave:

portage ave side of the hydro building:

aptn hq entrance and snow sculpture:

what a name..

central park area:

idle picnic/checkers tables waiting for summer..

hopefully soon-to-be repaired wadell fountain:

hargrave@cumberland:

now back to the exchange warehouse district:

building rehab:

the up-and-coming vicinity of mcdermott ave and albert st:

i guess everyone's still hibernating..

interesting flowered bike "art" installation:

that's today!!!

gentrification slowly taking hold..

the 360 degree heritage vista of mcdermott and albert:

classic shot of portage and main minus the surface lot..

market square area:

more building rehab.. the facade of this building is being preserved and a parkade is being built within its walls:

winnipeg parking wars:

quick jaunt past the centennial centre on main st:

one of the various theatre venues throughout this area:

newly-relocated costume museum of canada:

newly built condos on waterfront dr:

and we leave ya with some shots of the forks...

frozen-over skateboard plaza retrofitted for snowboard use:

Very far out

First off, nice pictures, Cat.
Next up:
Man, this is completely messed up.... Today (around the time you were out as well) I took nearly the same walk as you did. Your thread is almost a street - by - street tour of my exact route today as I put up posters for an upcoming CD release party. I am surprized I didn't see you out there. I also noticed that "Is this love I'm feeling?" scrawl. Crazy. But enough of my deja vu rant. Nice post!

depressing. after spending the past week in sydney and melbourne, it makes me sad at the potential that winnipeg has yet will never act upon.

but it does photograph well! nice jeff!

thanks for the comments guys!

lenin - that's pretty crazy about our similar paths.. good thing you never had a camera and wanted to post your pics too or i woulda ruined it! haha

1ajs - i didn't get into too much detail of the churches because they just weren't doing it for me at the time.. maybe when there's leaves!

wgy_guy - post your australia pics!!!! and i agree about the potential thing, at least the exchange seems to be coming along nicely now.. i wish that phat daddy's building would turn into something soon though.. the views from that building would be amazing.

Yep

Thanks for the invite. I live in Winnipeg, though I was born in Germany and raised in Calgary (also spent a couple years in Vancouver and a lil' spell in San Diego). I'm a skyscraper / urban development geek, and have been on this site for years. Thought I should finally join so one day I could post some (albeit shitty) photographs! Anyways, nice shots. Winnipeg seems to get pretty good representation here....

Great stuff! love the back alley shots, so nice to have almost normal temps. Photographing in -30c is torture...

wicked tour...so much potential.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ARE PUTTING A PARKADE INTO A BUILDING LIKE THAT!

ya.. it's pretty crazy, but the top interior areas were gutted by a fire like 20 years ago then it sat vacant and decaying since then so there wasn't much else that could have been done. due to its high-profile location, it's a good enough compromise i suppose..

flar - one of these days i'll hit up a residential neighbourhood or two.. i've been meaning to forever so stay tuned!

this is one of the first areas of Winnipeg I showed to my quebecoise wife when I flew her out to visit the mysterious west for the first time in 2005, and she loves the city now. First impressions are always important. Thanks for the pics, Jeff.

Nice to see some of that beautiful grit. I don't think it is possible to photograph the exchange district and not have it come out looking good. (Don't get me wrong, your pics are excellent, they make it look great!)

Speaking of this project preserving a facade for the parking garage, I wonder (however unlikely it would be) if it would be possible to return a facade back into the walls of a building for residential/commercial use? Or would it just be a new building built inside the facade if this were to happen, a la the St. Boniface basilica? How was the Red River College done?

10 years ago this is what people were saying about the exchange district. Yet it has changed remarkably little.

As for the hydro building:

What's going to be done with the concrete "fin" that juts out? Will it be painted or covered with something. Damn that's ugly.

thanks for the extra comments guys!

204 - the fin on hydro will be covered in some form of panelling from what i've seen/heard.. similar to the convention reno job maybe? not too sure. it's the last thing to be finished as they still have to attach an 8-storey tall extension to it.

Uh...what ?
It's not exactly a comletely new neighbourhood or anything but to say it's hardly changed is defnitely untrue.

RRCC, Waterfront, and numerous refits. I don't know what you expect in a slow-growth city like Winnipeg but for the Exchange, just those projects alone are more progress than that area has seen in decades.

Winnipeg is a nice city! The only problem is the cold winters, but summers are really hot and nice!
