Man, this is completely messed up.... Today (around the time you were out as well) I took nearly the same walk as you did. Your thread is almost a street - by - street tour of my exact route today as I put up posters for an upcoming CD release party. I am surprized I didn't see you out there. I also noticed that "Is this love I'm feeling?" scrawl. Crazy. But enough of my deja vu rant. Nice post!
lenin - that's pretty crazy about our similar paths.. good thing you never had a camera and wanted to post your pics too or i woulda ruined it! haha
1ajs - i didn't get into too much detail of the churches because they just weren't doing it for me at the time.. maybe when there's leaves!
wgy_guy - post your australia pics!!!! and i agree about the potential thing, at least the exchange seems to be coming along nicely now.. i wish that phat daddy's building would turn into something soon though.. the views from that building would be amazing.
Thanks for the invite. I live in Winnipeg, though I was born in Germany and raised in Calgary (also spent a couple years in Vancouver and a lil' spell in San Diego). I'm a skyscraper / urban development geek, and have been on this site for years. Thought I should finally join so one day I could post some (albeit shitty) photographs! Anyways, nice shots. Winnipeg seems to get pretty good representation here....
I've always like Winnipeg. I'd like to see some good neighbourhood tours.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ARE PUTTING A PARKADE INTO A BUILDING LIKE THAT!

I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ARE PUTTING A PARKADE INTO A BUILDING LIKE THAT!
ya.. it's pretty crazy, but the top interior areas were gutted by a fire like 20 years ago then it sat vacant and decaying since then so there wasn't much else that could have been done. due to its high-profile location, it's a good enough compromise i suppose..
flar - one of these days i'll hit up a residential neighbourhood or two.. i've been meaning to forever so stay tuned!
this is one of the first areas of Winnipeg I showed to my quebecoise wife when I flew her out to visit the mysterious west for the first time in 2005, and she loves the city now. First impressions are always important. Thanks for the pics, Jeff.
Nice to see some of that beautiful grit. I don't think it is possible to photograph the exchange district and not have it come out looking good. (Don't get me wrong, your pics are excellent, they make it look great!)
Speaking of this project preserving a facade for the parking garage, I wonder (however unlikely it would be) if it would be possible to return a facade back into the walls of a building for residential/commercial use? Or would it just be a new building built inside the facade if this were to happen, a la the St. Boniface basilica? How was the Red River College done?
204 - the fin on hydro will be covered in some form of panelling from what i've seen/heard.. similar to the convention reno job maybe? not too sure. it's the last thing to be finished as they still have to attach an 8-storey tall extension to it.
10 years ago this is what people were saying about the exchange district. Yet it has changed remarkably little.
Uh...what ?
It's not exactly a comletely new neighbourhood or anything but to say it's hardly changed is defnitely untrue.
RRCC, Waterfront, and numerous refits. I don't know what you expect in a slow-growth city like Winnipeg but for the Exchange, just those projects alone are more progress than that area has seen in decades.
