^^Yeah, there was a more substantial story in The Austin Business Journal I posted in Reply 470

I like this new design a lot better than the one with all the offset windows, but I agree with others that it does look more like an office tower.

This looks like a scaled up 80's office park that would have been located just south of the river. And what is up with the deathstar black glass that I thought we had finally gotten away from.

The step back setback looks ridiculous. What's the problem with putting the facade up front again? This is the CBD.

Shame - that was one of the few blocks left where you could put a distinctive building along the waterfront.

The brown facade+dark glass combo is a step way backward. I'm not a fan of this at all. Show me street level retail and I'll feel a little better.

Man, what are y'all smoking? The darker glass and tan facade are fucking awesome. Y'all are really tripping. I bet y'all are gonna love this building when it's done. You just have some mixed up notions about it.

You know what downtown Austin needs?! More 80's suburban-office-park architecture, but 40 or so stories tall right on the river. No one is EVER going to regret building this one. :-/

The stepbacks are a requirement of the Waterfront Overlay District. Otherwise, the buildings could only be as tall as Silicon Labs.

I realize why, I still think, a. It looks absurd, and, b. the waterfront overlay forces silly design like this.

None of this building is taking place on the waterfront, its across a really wide road and a good sized park. Central Park in NY doesn't need to be protected from the horror of tall buildings (its more dramatic because of the way they frame the park and the wonderful juxtaposition of the city next to the natural), why do we need to do it here?

In anycase, instead of getting a nice building, we get this...have we accomplished anything?

I will say that the ground level retail looks good, potentially great and this definitely is more important in my mind than a stand out skyscraper. At the end of the day, I'll be just fine with this building if they help activate the streets around it.

If they have a swimming pool or restaurant on top of each of the stair steps with some greenery then I think it'd be really cool... Would be nice to eat dinner looking out over the river with people swimming on the tier below. Those types of uses for the tiers excite me.
