You shouldn't have to sit down to stop on a board. The only time I would ever stop is to snap in my binding/crank my binding when I get off the lift but good ski resorts have well placed benches for that

Yes, this is true... but it still annoys me

Yeah, you can stop without having to sit on kneel down. It's just the inexperienced or inconsiderate boarders that do that. I was on the ski out at Sunshine yesterday, I was ready to hit someone because of all the people who just stop right in the middle of the runs, while others go flying past you nearly knocking you over. some people are really rude when they go to the hill.

I don't ski, but snowmobile, and the best area I've been to is the cat-skiing lodge where my dad works (we aren't really allowed to sled during the ski season though). The majority of the guests come from Europe and the States, has anyone here ever gone cat-skiing. I know of a few places like Chatter Creek (Revelstoke), Mustang Powder (Anstey Arm of Shushwap), and Monashee Powder (Cherryville, where my dad works).

The top of Wolverine chair is the worst for boarders clogging everything up while they adjust their bindings.

That's not their fault. The owners of ski hills should really strive to have benches for boarders coming off the chair, for both goofy and regular boarders.

I'm a skier myself. When I see a snowboarder sitting in a dumb spot, I can be a bit of an ass about it... I often like to use "scare tactics" to get them to move (cut really close to where their sitting at a good clip).

Just wondering, has anyone on this thread ever ventured out to Castle Mountain near Pincher Creek? How is it? Here's an Edmontonian who hates Banff's crowds, but is getting a little tired of Marmot. Just wondering if it's worth my while or if I'm better off going to Fernie or Kicking Horse.

I think I have to disagree with this. I have been noticing more and more skiers at hills the last couple of seasons, it seems to be making a come back. I am in my mid twenties and have been skiing since I was able to walk, and have more friends that ski instead of board. I do have a couple of friends that board as well, but they are the minority.

The best way I have heard it described is steep, deep and cheap. It isn't a really big hill like Fernie, but they usually get a ton of snow, and the runs they have are pretty challenging. I have only been there once, but my cousin has a cabin at the base and he swears by that mountain.

I do at least one multi-day visit a season to Castle. While it doesn't have the vertical of the others, the terrain is unbelievable and the snow is to die for (most days anyway). I've only once ever seen ice-like conditions on the hill.

It's not as rustic as it was 10+ years ago, but it is definitely a unique and enjoyable hill. If you're a strong intermediate to expert skier you will love this hill.

That's always good to hear, then. I guess I'm just surprised to see so many boarders these days, as it wasn't very long ago that they were a tiny minority. Hell, I still remember when some hills didn't allow them at all. Plus, most of the young pups I work with, when I tell them I ski, give me the old "yeah, that makes sense, you're old".

I've heard that some hills in Utah still ban snowboarders?

My family has had a condo in Panorama since '89(Horsethief right by the Toby chair) and that has been the main place I've done my skiing since.

The last couple of years have been substantially better then some of the years before that. Although I still remember getting huge amounts of snow in the early 90's, however the temperature would sit around -20 for most of the day. Now there seems to be less snow but the more comfortable temperatures for skiing/boarding.

I like to stick to the upper parts of the hill and the more isolated runs that don't see as many of the people on them. I love those parts of the mountain where you can stop on a run and see no one and the air is absolutely quiet! What a feeling!

Of course what I like most is the year round aspect of the village now, especially with the golf course and the hot springs around now. It's become a great little resort that still feels cozy and not big and overpowering. I'll take Panorama over the ego-fest of giant cabins and ridiculous speedboats down on the lake in Invermere. If I wanted to live in a suburb I'd do it in Calgary, not where I'm taking my vacations!(no suburbs for me at all though) However Invermere airport is a great little facility to fly into for a day trip or weekend to visit some friends in the valley.

Edit: It was a great day when they finally retired the Horizon double chair, champagne and summit t-bars and introduced the Quad(Champagne Express) and Summit Quad to get to the top of the mountain.

Relatives of mine have a cabin in Whitefish, it's been a while since I've been there, but I remember it as a great place. As for skiing, I've only skied down there once years ago and don't remember much about it.

We used to go to Whitefish every New years when I was younger as a family. But I haven't been there in probably over a decade. I am going though again this new years with some friends. The hill is pretty big from what I remember, and I think they have expanded it quite a bit from the last time I was there. I do remember it having good snow, but that was a long time ago and my memory might not be the most reliable.

I've only been to the Canyons in Utah, and there were definitely boarders there. I'd really love to try Snowbird next time I go out that way. I must say, the snow in Utah was some of the nicest I've ever skied in, it's still lose and fluffy on main runs at 3 in the afternoon.

Utah claims to have the best snow on earth, but since it's colder here, shouldn't that give that honour to us?

Hey, anyone that's a crazy ski buff wanna list off every resort around here that they know? Say, anything within a 4-5 hour drive of Calgary/Edmonton. I know the obvious ones like Sunshine and Louise, etc, but I every once in a while hear of some place in BC and I have no idea where it even is.

Better yet, is there a comprehensive map somewhere? I get the impression we might have 20-30 resorts within a 5 hour drive.

I love skiing - it's my favourite sport, winter or summer. Obviously in my current location it's not exactly something I can easily do though

Since I'm planning to stay in Shanghai for several years, I will have to wait until 2009 (February - I get a month off then) to go skiing again - I will come back to Calgary for a ski vacation then.
