Great Escape: The Chrysler Building
Visiting an iconic skyscraper as important to the New York skyline as the Empire State building.

By Patrick Conti
December 28, 2011

Quote:
Anyone who's ever stood opposite of Manhattan Island, soaking in the beautiful landscape now synonymous with New York City is amply familiar with William Van Alen's art deco tower known simply as the Chrysler Building.

Still how many out there have actually been inside the lobby of this iconic New York building and stared up at the ceiling fresco "Transport and Human Endeavor" painted by Edward Trumbull. Our guess is not very many, which is why we've chosen the Chrysler Building as this week's Great Escape.

Built between 1928 and 1930 by architect William Van Alen, the Chrysler Building is far from the typical New York City tourist attractions—no observation deck, nor guided tours. With 77 stories standing over 1046 feet tall, the Chrysler Building's exterior features a trademark shiny vertex, stainless-steel eagle head hood ornaments, Chrysler radiator caps decorating the buildings crown as well as racing cars on the 31st floor.

Today, the Chrysler Building is an active office building, but one which offers free admission to anyone interested in experiencing first the architectural brilliance of an iconic city structure that dates back to the early twentieth century.

My favorite. Always has been, always will be.

Kinda like the Beatles, this building is in a class all of its own.

It's still hard for me to decide who's older. Yes ESB was born second, but it's taller. But Chrysler did age alot. It's shorter than ESB, and didn't grow an inch. But ESB must have had good nutrition.

This was another episode of "If Skyscrapers Were Homo sapiens".

Here's one I took while in NYC this fall, it's some art deco detailing at street level:

Anyone have any good pics of the "cloud club" or the rooms in the spire before they got gutted in the 60s?

^ You sure are asking for "construction details" on a whole bunch of different building threads! What do you mean by "construction details"?

Ask William Van Allen, oh he's kinda dead. Well can't help you there. Ask the contractors of the Chrysler.
