The road to Churchill is a long range goal but is showing positive signs that it will happen. When I was in Rankin last month there was talk of the road up being more feasible because of the potential mining in the area. Mines in Arviat, Whale Cove and possible 8 in the Rankin area.

Doesn't this trip of Harpers end in Churchill this time.

I have heard this as well, but I'm quite sceptical that anything will come of it unless the Canadian government decides to promote economic development of the north. There is a lot of mineral exploration in Nunavut now and road access would make extraction much more viable.

Harper giveth with one hand, and taketh with the other.

Eureka station forced to close
Harper's funding announcement for the new centre Thursday comes soon after another research facility had to close its doors because of a lack of funding. The Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) in Eureka, Nunavut, was Canada's northernmost research laboratory.

The station, on Ellesmere Island, had been tracking ozone depletion, air quality and climate change in the High Arctic since 2005. Its research was used to detect and analyze the largest hole in the ozone over the Arctic ever detected last year.

The Canadian Network for Detection of Atmospheric Change, an informal network of university researchers that ran the station, wasn't able to secure the $1.5-million annual funding needed to operate it year-round so operations are are winding down.

Three-quarters of its funding came from the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences and the International Polar Year program, but Harper's government stopped funding those programs and the money dried up. The scientists applied for other government grants but weren't successful.

The Paved road ends more or less in The Pas, the gravel ends in Gilliam, if you look on a map it is not that far off from Churchill..All though the issue here is the same with the Railway, the permafrost is melting more rapidly and the rail line is a joke now and needs to be replaced. A road would have to be built very different then any other road known to I guess float on the permafrost base.

It is to bad that many years ago they pulled the Military out of Churchill, as it was 3 times the size it is now, that would have made the road to it more important.

The way I see it, those southern Nunavut communities would benefit significantly with a road. I see prices going down because they'd finally be able to ship things up in a truck. I also think Arviat's and Rankin Inlet's populations would grow, maybe even at the expense of Iqaluit, due to the ease of access. I agree with Chadillac though, the main reason I want this to happen is just because I'd like to see the north become a truly integrated part of our country.

So I'm loading for Jean Marie River NWT on Monday morning. It's ~40km out of the way, but I'm going to see if I can get some pics of the Deh Cho bridge on my way back.

A documentary about the region Baffinlands mine is going in, and about climate change. It gives an interesting look at the Inuit perspective of this development and of climate change.

Pond inlet and Igloolik were both pushing for development in their comunity. Igloolik will see the biggest impact because of the ice breakers that will be used. Overall though I will watch with great interest how both communities change over the years. More money coming into both communities that's not government.

This is a pretty big step here. Nunavuts first railroad and major commercial port. Pretty cool stuff. Would have probably been better if they had just done to railroad to iqaluit and made it a port city. But I do understand the economics, logistics and environmental concerns behind their decision so bravo non the less!
