In honour of Red Deer passing the 100 000 mark, I thought I'd share my two best skyline shots I've ever gotten of the city

Red Deer looks like Kelowna the way the buildings are so far away from each other, both cities would have nice little skylines if the buildings were closer together.

Was in Red Deer last August, loved the way they've spruced up the downtown, particularly Gaetz and 50th, lots of wide sidewalk and new lights/benches, etc.

The only problem is it was rather dead (it was a Sunday), mainly because you have a beach resort 20 mins away, which was *packed*. Does it tend to be busier in the Spring/Fall?

Ross St is usually where it's at during the summer, there's lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and live music. As well as several festivals and weekly market on Gaetz ave.

Hey everyone. I'm also from Red Deer. Born and raised in the area. I like to keep up on what the city is doing. I'm always looking at plans and projects... mostly road construction projects but the odd building always catches my eye.

I'll try and post pics of major projects.

Another place for all you Red Deerians to go is the 'For the Red Deer area.' reddit. There are some people on there that talk all things Red Deer. Good place.

EDIT: Actually, I'll start with this video for a post. It's a really well done video by the City of Red Deer.

This is a rough timeline of completion for the North Highway Connector project. I'm super excited for the first phase of completion (yellow). Going to be so awesome! There is also a new 2 lane roundabout at the southern tip of the yellow portion in the pic. (67th Street and 30th Ave.) It isn't fully open yet but most of the roundabout construction is complete. Only thing remaining is to divert traffic into it and remove old pavement where the big east-to-south arc is. More retail is going where the arc is now.

Interestingly, Hudsons Pub is setting up shop in the bottom of Stantec Executive Place.

I could be wrong about it, but a major pub like that right in the heart of downtown just might be a great thing for the centre of downtown. Grand opening is slated for April 22nd.

The Alberta government has given funding for the Gaetz/Taylor interchange on QEII highway. This is a huge deal for local residents. A major win for a much needed project.

Going to be amazing once it's done.

That is awesome news! Definitely will be a draw to downtown.

That's a great space, and now I will know where to find people when my calls to the office down there go unanswered.

Yah. It's open as of yesterday I guess. People are saying it's pretty great. I'll be checking it out ASAP.

Looked into that a bit out of curiousity, it should be a huge benefit to through-traffic as well, especially coming from the south - taking that turnoff to follow QEII where it splits from Gaetz at full speed can be a little spooky sometimes, happy to see them smooth that out a bit.

Info is here, but can't link directly to it because the website design is stupid:

Yah, I'm super excited over the whole project. The curve northbound is super sketchy even in good weather. I've waited years to see this project come to fruition. Really happy it's happening now.

Now we just need QEII from Penhold to Blackfalds 6-laned and this section of QEII is good to go!

Correction, need it 6 laned from Airdrie to Leduc.

As much as I love road expansions, especially QEII because I drive it so much, I'm not quite convinced that 6-laning it entirely is needed yet. There are large rural spans of it that might not see a high enough AADT rate to warrant 6 lanes. But I'm not a traffic/road engineer so...

But I see your point.
