Nanaimo approves development permit for $34M downtown hotel
Quote:
At long last, it looks as though Nanaimo will get the downtown hotel it has been dreaming of, with council unanimously approving a development permit for a $34-million project.
PEG Development of Utah is buying a site from the City of Nanaimo for $750,000 to build a nine-storey hotel. The city’s hope is that it will help to foster tourism, add vitality to the core and attract more conventions to the adjacent Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

I have not heard that the project is dead.

It could be dead for all I know but it seems a bit premature to say it is dead.

You're right, it isn't dead.

I messaged the company and they said they've already purchased the land and they're redesigning it which explains why it isn't on their website. As i'm sure many felt the same way, I wasn't crazy about the design so hopefully they come up with something nicer architecturally while keeping it at 9 stories instead of the previously proposed 6 stories, and find a way to connect it to the conference center.

Downtown Nanaimo conference centre hotel project hits 'key milestone'

Quote:
NANAIMO — The City sees a critical step towards a proposed $22 million downtown Nanaimo hotel as another positive sign the long-awaited project will become a reality.

Utah-based PEG Developments submitted a building permit application on April 20 for a nine-storey, 155 room Courtyard by Marriott at 100 Gordon St., behind the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

Bill Corsan, the City's deputy director of community development, told NanaimoNewsNOW he hoped the permit would be issued by July after working with PEG to make any necessary changes.

Corsan said PEG paid an estimated $15,000 to submit the permit application, a further sign the developer is serious about moving ahead with the project. The real test, he said, will be whether the permit is picked up once it is approved because PEG would be required to pay roughly $200,000 to the City at that point.

In late 2017, Nanaimo Council approved a development permit and a 10-year property tax exemption for the project. That exemption is estimated to save PEG roughly $4.5 million. The hotel is also eligible for an exemption from development cost charges, an estimated savings of $650,000.

Downtown Nanaimo hotel project moving forward

Quote:
Plans for a downtown Nanaimo hotel have moved one step closer to becoming reality.

U.S.-based company PEG Development have submitted an updated building permit application for its proposed nine-storey hotel project at 100 Gordon St., located across from the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, according to a city press release.

The proposed $23-million hotel would be a Courtyard by Marriott and will now have 172 rooms instead of 155 rooms that PEG Development had proposed last year.

^Great news. Marriott Hotel looks great and really makes Nanaimo look like a destination, especially to cruise ship passengers from outside Canada who visit the city on some of the Alaskan cruise ship runs.

If the hotel is still on the table I don't know why it's not listed as an upcoming project
