Ottawa Street

Figured Ottawa Street should have it's own thread.

The Ottawa Street BIA gateways to be placed at Ottawa and Barton Streets, and Ottawa and Main Streets, complement the home décor brand of the BIA. The gateway, pictured to the left, was designed in 2007 with implementation planned for 2008. Design details include a gateway base in the shape of a spool of cotton; a needle and thread; and buttons.

The Centre Mall farmers' market is no more, but the same local growers are now at a new Ottawa Street Farmers' Market a short distance south of the mall, which is being demolished and redeveloped.

The farmers have incorporated and hired Tom Shepherd to manage the new location -- on two block-long city parking lots behind stores on the east side of Ottawa Street North between Edinburgh and Cannon streets. A grand opening is planned in May.

The new market, like the old, is open every Friday and Saturday year-round.

The easiest way to find it is to drive along Ottawa to Edinburgh, a corner marked by the lemon-yellow facade of Limoncello restaurant on the south and the fabric-industry-themed East Kiwanis Place parkette on the north.

There's plenty of parking along Ottawa and in a lot across Edinburgh from the market.

The gateway post kinda reminds me of Yonge St in Toronto.

The public square they built kind of reminds me of a little square along Queen W in Toronto as well... I can't find a picture of the giant spools or thread they have in that public square.

Farmers' market may get $40,000 from city

The Hamilton Spectator

The city's grants committee is recommending $40,000 in seed money for the Ottawa Street farmers' market.

The market, which was forced to move this year because of the Centre Mall redevelopment, has opened its new location on a city parking lot behind stores on the east side of Ottawa Street North between Edinburgh and Cannon streets.

"It's vibrant. It's exciting," Councillor Sam Merulla said of the new location.

The market recently incorporated as non-profit to qualify for city funding. Merulla said the grant, which must still be approved by council, will be used for infrastructure projects such as lighting.

The market is open every Friday and Saturday year-round. Merulla said the vendors are interested in opening up additional markets on the Mountain and in Dundas.

I was at the “Ottawa Street Farmer’s Market” back on August 23rd. I was surprised how much bigger it was than the one at the Centre Mall. And it was packed. The market was in two of the four parking lots and the other two lots where almost full with cars. This was at 8:30 in the morning before any of the stores opened. I hope the restaurants are open that early to capitalize on the traffic for breakfast? What the area needs now is a good coffee shop next to the market.

actually there's a great cafe right near the market. It's called Cafe Limoncello.
Awesome cappuccino's and good Italian pizza's and food.
Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I have been there many times and it is great. I am looking for something that would be open at 7am and have a nice outside area in the nice weather. A cross between and Starbucks and Bad Dog.

It looks like it's getting more business since it moved. When I went to it at the centre mall a while back it was quite slow that day. But by the looks of the pic that's a good sign it's this busy.

I guess I should ask HMagazine this, but does anyone know which storefront the new arts/bookstore will locate (Under the Moon from James North)??
Also, anyone know when it opens??

A more general question - does anyone know when these nifty gateways are supposed to be installed?? They said 2008 and we're running out of time.

TBH I don't like the design of those gateways..they seem kind of childish rather than sophisticated. But, on the bright side they would be better than nothing!

Edit: I guess they probably fit in with the types of stores around though eh?? I am not really familiar with the types of stores on Ottawa...

I never think of that place since I don't drink coffee or tea and I don't like sweets. I am trying to think the date that Tim's opened. But it's our history.

And if you noticed the last pic that DC38 has posted here, those are to represent the fabric stores. Those stools are made to look like spools of thread.
