Always nice to get a top tier show here. Another Hallmark Holiday movie is less exciting.

What. The entire point of Hallmark movies is the low budget, so why not just film at the local park instead of flying up here?

For some reason movies based on video games have failed time after time after time again, but this decade seems to have been extremely promising for TV series based on video games:

The Last of Us
Arcane
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Castlevania
Halo (maybe a bit polarizing)
Resident Evil (ignore this one)

Maybe the millennial consumer who doesn't want to get off their couch and go to the movies but will binge TV at home is to blame.

Vancouver is the low budget filming location.

Oh and FYI in my research for this thread I found out there actually is a Mass Effect TV show in the planning stages with Amazon Studios. So enjoy!

As somebody who has played the game, this is gonna be like a GOT book reader where you just watch other people experience TLOU2 for the first time. Watching people’s reactions is going to be just as entertaining if not more so compared to the actual material

Just bear in mind there's a dark timeline where you get a season 3, 4, and 5; just like the GoT book readers who got a season 6, 7, and 8.

Millennial here: unironically, Cineplex was filled with other millennials all three times I watched Way of Water, so I don't think it's that... more like studio execs spending all the time and resources on "real" movies. And streaming services have been really great for animation, which is really great for episode-based stories.

Apparently they've also done shoots in Memphis, Salt Lake, Atlanta, NC and Connecticut, which is somewhat less hypocritical for a channel that's always preaching small town American values despite being headquartered in LA and filming in Canada.

Eh, seeing as the Mass Effect movie was announced back in 2010 and never went anywhere, I'll wait for the trailer before I get excited.

Facts - watching everybody else watch the outbreak, the magazine and the giraffe was an absolute joy.

Double check that old exchange rate.

Our low wages relative to the average aren't just in Tech.

Technically the exchange rate doesn't mean much for wages, it's not like Europeans with their big ol Euro make big tech dollars either.

We just inherently have lower wages here compared to the US, plain and simple.

Might be likelier to get some material for Overwatch or Diablo than Starcraft at this point

There's also the problem of Henry Cavill's 40k project on the way.

Not sure if there's room for 40k and the knockoff at the same time.

An Overwatch movie would likely be a better moneymaker, but a worse story (so, probably going to happen)... Diablo gets an automatic R rating and loses half the summer crowd, or they PG it down and it loses the other half.

The dollar has a lot to do with Hollywood productions coming up here. I'm not sure what else to say.

When the dollar was at parity it was very difficult for the local film industry.

What's the magazine scene you're referring to?

A new video of mine exploring the variety of film locations throughout southern B.C. Besides the movie clips all the shots are my own taken over the last few years:

Larco is pausing their film studio project at Big Bend.

Quote:
Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley wants to take advantage of a film studio proposal falling through to enhance the ecology of the property, according to a new council report.

The City of Burnaby had previously sold the 18.5-acre property (including part of a road) at 3990 Marine Way for $136 million to Larco Investments Ltd., owner of Bridge Studios, in 2021.

Larco planned to build a 300,000-square-foot film studio with 16 sound stages, mill shops and office space.

Now Mayor Mike Hurley has submitted a motion to council that says: "Larco has expressed that they do not wish to proceed with the studio development at this time and would be withdrawing their rezoning application."

The motion does not give a reason for Larco dropping out of the project.

The Burnaby NOW has reached out to Larco and the City of Burnaby for more information.

Hurley recommended staff study whether the city can protect "environmentally and recreationally valuable assets" at 3990 Marine Way, "as well as natural creek and wetland features for the benefit and enjoyment of the community."

The mayor's motion stated the withdrawal of the application means staff and council can "revisit the land use designation of the subject site and best ways to protect ecological features for the city as part of that review."

Council will discuss the motion and vote on it April 15.

Part of Larco's development plan included enhancements to riverside areas near Kaymar and Glenlyon creeks.

The developer had submitted a rezoning application in 2021 for the film studio.

Larco has owned and operated Bridge Studios in Burnaby since 2007, with sites at 2400 Boundary Rd. and 7705 Griffiths Rd.

It is also developing another studio at Lake City Way (7725 Lougheed Hwy.), estimated to be complete in spring 2025.

Updated article clarifies that Larco just forfeited the $20 million deposit to get out of the deal.
