BUENOS AIRES - Pritzker Prize Ceremony 2009

Zumthor heads to Argentina for Pritzker Prize

by Swisster Staff

14 April 2009 | 12:18

A ceremony has been scheduled for May 29 in Buenos Aires to honour Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, named the recipient of this year’s Pritzker Prize. The Hyatt Foundation, which organizes the 100,000-dollar award often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of architecture,” named Zumthor, 65, as the 2009 winner over the Easter holiday weekend. Zumthor’s designs include chapels, spas, museums and housing for seniors. One of his most highly works is the spa at Vals in the canton of Graubünden. ''His buildings have a commanding presence ... showing us again and again that modesty in approach and boldness in overall result are not mutually exclusive,'' Hyatt Foundation said in a statement released on Sunday. ''Humility resides alongside strength.'' The architect has a small staff of 15 at his office in the eastern Swiss town of Haldenstein. The Pritzker Prize was established in 1979 by the Pritzker family of Chicago to honour architectural achievements. This year’s award marks the second time Swiss architects have received the honour. The Basel architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron won the prize in 2001.

Acá algo en castellano:

Peter Zumthor: Pritzker Prize 2009

Lord Peter Palumbo(Chair)
Alejandro Aravena
Shigeru Ban
Rolf Fehlbaum
Carlos Jimenez
Juhani Pallasmaa
Renzo Piano
Karen Stein
Martha Thorne(Dirección ejecitiva)

Del acta del jurado (idioma original):
“He has conceived his method of practice almost as carefully as each of his projects (...) He develops buildings of great integrity — untouched by fad or fashion. Declining a majority of the commissions that come his way, he only accepts a project if he feels a deep affinity for its program, and from the moment of commitment, his devotion is complete, overseeing the project’s realization to the very last detail (...) In Zumthor’s skillful hands, like those of the consummate craftsman, materials from cedar shingles to sandblasted glass are used in a way that celebrates their own unique qualities, all in the service of an architecture of permanence"
