Vicksburg, Mississippi - tons of old homes and buildings, and an ironclad!

Vicksburg could, no, should, be the "Gettysburg of the south." the battle was fought at the same time as Gettysburg and was more of a tactical victory, effectively splitting the CSA in half. like Gettysburg, the battlefield has lots of attractive monuments, and intact earthworks. it even has the only civil war ironclad above water, the USS Cairo. in 1894, the first Coca-Cola was bottled in Vicksburg.

Vicksburg is a city full of potential; there's tons of old houses perfect for bed and breakfasts to hold tourists to the large 1863 siege battlefield in addition to several casino hotels. open up some antique stores and art shops to spend the winnings and retirement away. but despite this potential, the city's largely falling apart, which is tragic.

like Waco, the city was crippled by a 1-2 punch in the 50s; a 1953 F5 tornado that destroyed around 1000 buildings and damage from the urban renewal period. there's also a shameful history of lynchings.

but what's left of the urban fabric is beautiful and rife with potential if civic leaders ever wake up.

the 1953 tornado, like the rest of the city's history, is commemorated on the walls of the Catfish Row park by the river

Wow, some beautiful old houses. Thanks, LSyd, it looks as though the South has some really characterful cities and towns. Vicksburg is no exception to that!

Great pictures. Vicksburg looks like a cool little preserved town with a little bit of grit to go along.

Great tour. What I really like about Vicksburg is the physical setting. I've really got to check it out; I've only ever been by it on the freeway.

Yeah, it looks like it has so much potential. I'd hope it'd see more reinvestment than it has. It seems like Mississippi -- like a lot of states -- forgot about its cities, which is sad because it has so few, and it makes you wonder where all the growth is happening.

Great tour, I did one of Vicksburg myself last year. It's got it's rought spots but a charming place, and I am glad you made it to the Cairo, that ship is unlike anything I've ever seen.

man, this is great. having recently re-watched all twelve friggin' hours of ken burns' civil war, i've wondered why in the world i've never set foot in this town. good to see that old courthouse building with the clock tower from the circa-civil war photos is still there.

i take it there's no monument to grant there???

Wow - amazing tour. Great variety of styles, and really beefy buildings - the kind of building stock you'd expect from a major city.

Excellent city in the south!! I visited there back in 83, but never went into the downtown part. Quite a stock of old buildings and houses!!
