Niagara Falls, Ontario... eh?

The first week in June my wife and I traveled about 4 1/2 hours north to spend our anniversary weekend in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I've been here a few times, most recently in 2007 and I'm always impressed with the number and height of the towers (hotels, casino, observation) compared to the relatively smallness of the city. It's a fun place to be. Here are a few pictures I took while there.

1.

2. We stayed on the 27th floor of the Embassy Suites. Pretty decent room, and very big. Could have easily fit another 5 or 6 people. Though I recommend parking in the casino lot instead of paying any of the ridiculous hotel parking fees ($20/day vs. $5 total)

3.

4. The second (newer) Hilton tower is the tallest building in the city at 58 stories/ 581 ft.

5. Clifton Hill is the super touristy area of town. This is looking down the hill.

6. Looking up Clifton Hill.

7. Miniature golf course. With dinosaurs, of course.

8.

9. The larger hotels are mostly concentrated in one area (close to the falls).

10.

11. View from our hotel room.

12. Scotiabank Convention Center

13. The back of the Fallsview Casino

14. Skylon Tower was the tallest structure in Niagara Falls until Hilton Tower 2 was built. It's 520 ft tall but a lot of the promotional material use 775 feet, as this is the distance from the top of the tower to the bottom of the falls. It's a little misleading sometimes.

15. Some of the larger buildings on the Niagara Falls, NY side. The largest one (on the left) is the Seneca Casino.

16. Getting wet on the Maid of the Mist tour.

17. Bridal Veil Falls on the American side.

19.Toronto Power Generating Station, built in 1906, not used since 1974. I really enjoy this building.

The next few pictures were taken from the top of the Skylon Tower (we ate there for dinner on Saturday).

26. Buffalo, NY

27. Looking toward the Clifton Hill area of the city. If it was clearer out, Toronto would be visible on the horizon.

Looks like it was a nice weekend to be there! Haven't been to Niagara Falls since 2000.

..Does the Hilton look good with that crowning nipple or what? It looks freakish, out of proportion, a first I have ever seen on a building that size. How does it enhance the look? I guess it goes with the circus atmosphere of the tourist trap....

What, you don't like nipples?

I was thinking they used that to house the aircraft warning beacon... but now that I look back through some of my pictures, I'm pretty sure the beacon is on top of the little dome. So it is just a decorative nipple. Does it really bother you that much? I never thought much of it until you mentioned it.

I actually stayed recently at the Hilton on the 45th floor. Gorgeous rooms, no doubt about it, and the views were amazing! Great shots, TBone!

^ I think it has more in common with Atlantic City than with Las Vegas.

Cheap LV or not, we make the US side of the falls look bloody well puny haha

To juxtapose however...all the cheap booze, smokes and clothing I'm in posession of at the moment are all from NF, NY so there's the best of both worlds!

Great shots mate...hope you come back

I'm sure we will... plus by hopping the border to Canada we get access to the wonder that is the Duty Free store. 1.75l of Bombay Sapphire for $30? Deal.

Nippled Hilton. I always thought that cupola looked ridiculous.

Sad to see a natural wonder turned into a cheap highway attraction.

Nice pictures. I never realized that the Hilton is across the street from the Fallsview Casino. I guess it's because I always gravitate towards the Fallsview when I'm there.

Great pics. Next time your down you should visit Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Its a nice break away from the circus that is Niagara Falls. The town is probably one of the most beautiful in Canada with a historic downtown and amazing gardens. There is also quite a few wineries that dot the countryside around the town.

I would like to, I've heard good things. Speaking of circuses, I wouldn't mind checking out Toronto sometime either.
