Mets fan?...

It's actually a very nice looking stadium, lightyears better than Shea.

I've been a Met fan since I was 8. And yeah, this stadium should be lightyears better than Shea, I mean Shea is... not great.

It's got some character but Shea is from the beginning of baseball's multi-purpose "Cookie Cutter" era stadiums that housed both baseball and football games. It's fitting that Shea (and RFK in Washington) will be the last as well.

Still hope they re-name the #7 train stop for the ballpark "William A. Shea station at Willets Point" or something... because even with it's quirks, Shea Stadium stood for something and someone. AN accomplishment getting an NL team back in the five Burroughs.

Oh yeah, it certainly is symbolic. I don't think that there is any question when it comes to that. But design wise and experience wise it just wasn't pleasant. But I see your point.

Tour the latest improvements at Citi Field

July 25, 2007

With its Grand Opening still more than a year and a half away, the Mets' new home is already beginning to look more like a real ballpark.

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon on Wednesday led a group of reporters on a tour of Citi Field, where he demonstrated the latest progress on the new stadium, which will open in 2009.

Among the most notable improvements, red brick which comprises the facade of the stadium has been partially laid. Inside the stadium, the foundation of the stands and luxury boxes which will some day hold up to 45,000 fans are now visible. The Jackie Robinson Rotunda, which will act as a point of entry for fans, is also taking shape.

The tour, which was the third given by the Mets since construction began last November, offered a firsthand view from the seats, which will be closer to the field than they are at cavernous Shea Stadium.

"We're on schedule, on budget," Wilpon said. "The progress is where it should be."

You can get a look here at some of the actual letters from the battle between O'Malley and Moses, a battle that ultimately ended with the Dodgers moving to LA and Shea Stadium being built in Queens...

Carlos,

You look like a hitman from "Carlitos Way". Great pics though.

Damn they really need to fix up Willets Point but that ballpark will add some much needed flare and quality construction.

the stadium looks great. the brick in person looks ok. the kind of pre-fabricated cheapness you would see in a themepark. the attempt at the original but not the original. but when the entire massice thing is done up, im sure it will look tons better. Im judging by the first story only. the main entrance faces directly at willets point which after exploring today can say is a disaster area. for one the area has no drainage, possibly no sewers. it hasn't rained here in 2 days yet there were ponds a couple feet deep where streets were. once we were completley blocked from going down a street unless by car and had to turn around. 3rd world country in eastern queens? to fix this up will be the biggest undertaking since they will have to build an entire underground network of utilities. more than an eyesore its a needle in your eye, but should they have to move? there are hundreds of businesses on those couple streets. how they do not cannibalize each other is beyond me since they basically all offer the same thing. but they are all seperate small entities who haven't done anything but be ugly. Im starting to question the way this redevelop is being planned.

eventually i'll post my half of the pics

Wow, great pics guys! I'm loving how the retro look is coming out so far. And boy they really need to redevelop the area ASAP! What's taking so long to put the plans into motion?
