wasn't the plan to close Terminal 2 for a year of repairs after Terminal 3 opens? That means it is going to be quite a few years before anything happens...

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Without warning, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport suddenly lost power twice this morning, trapping two passengers in terminal elevators.

At 9:26 a.m. this morning, the power suddenly went out in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, but the power was quickly restored. However, at 9:38 a.m., the two terminals went black again, trapping two passengers in separate elevators.

One passenger was trapped in an elevator in the south section of Terminal 1 and another passenger in an elevator in Terminal 2, reported TVBS. Both passengers have since been able to exit the elevators and are unharmed.

Some flights were delayed due to this morning's blackouts. Taiwanese movie star Brigitte Lin (林青霞) happened to be preparing to board Cathay Pacific Flight CX469 to Hong Kong when the second blackout struck, resulting an a 50-minute delay.

The Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) said that at 9:26 a.m. this morning, a high voltage circuit breaker was tripped in a 161KV transformer causing it to shut down, leading to sudden loss of power in the two terminals. The airport's emergency generator was then activated and started supplying power within three minutes.

The airport's facilities and equipment were soon restored to normal and passengers resumed boarding. The transformer was expected to return to normal within 40 minutes.

The power outage affected the departure hall of Terminal 1 and the arrival and departure halls of Terminal 2.

As for the exact cause of the blackout, TIAC officials said, "The cause is still under investigation, Presently, main power has been restored." Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) ordered that an investigation be carried out into the cause of the outage and steps be taken to avoid a recurrence of the problem.

Pothole in runway delays 121 flights at Taoyuan Airport

2019/03/10 18:53:42

Taipei, March 10 (CNA) Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport's south runway reopened Sunday after a pothole was discovered the previous day, causing delays to 121 flights.

The flights were delayed by an average of 52 minutes, with a Singapore-bound flight operated by Scoot, Singapore Airlines Group's budget airline, suffering the longest delay of nine hours, according to Taoyuan International Airport Corp. (TIAC).

The Scoot flight departed from Japan's Hokkaido and was scheduled to arrive in Singapore via Taiwan.

The flight should have landed at Taoyuan Airport at 9:20 p.m. Saturday and departed at 10:20 p.m. that same day but was forced to divert to Kaohsiung Airport after the discovery of the pothole.

It did not arrive in Taoyuan until 1:43 a.m. Sunday before taking off at 8 a.m., according to the company.

General manager of Scoot Taiwan, Victor Lee (李育修), confirmed that the flight was forced to divert to Kaohsiung Airport, leading to a nine-hour delay.

The airline then arranged accommodation for the 286 passengers to take a rest at Taoyuan Airport before leaving for Singapore, he said.

A 45cm long, 30cm wide and 3cm deep pothole was discovered at about 6:00 p.m. during a routine inspection with repair work not completed until 10:15 p.m. Saturday, according to TIAC.

It said the runway reopened during the early hours of Sunday after the paving material on the runway surface cooled down.

The 121 delayed flights included 85 inbound and 36 outbound flights, with eight inbound flights forced to divert to Kaohsiung Airport, including four operated by China Airlines, two by EVA Air, and one each from Scoot and Tigerair Taiwan, TIAC data showed.

In response, Wang Ming-teh (王明德), TIAC's new chairman, said Sunday he is determined to fix the problems at the airport, the country's main gateway, and will demand airport staff face issues rather than cover them up.

Since Wang assumed his post less than three months ago, he has had to deal with several serious problems. Other than the runway pothole, travelers were stuck in the airport's elevators during a power outage last Friday.

Given that the south runway at Taoyuan Airport resumed operation in January 2015 following an 11-month closure for renovations, the pothole spotted on Saturday is not an isolated problem, Wang said.

The airport suffers from systematic problems he is working to resolve, he added.

He is striving to improve operations at the airport on several fronts, including improving water and electricity supply infrastructure, runway safety and ensuring flights arrive and depart on schedule, Wang noted.

Pothole in Taoyuan Airport runway delays 121 flights

Around 121 flights were unable to depart on time on 10 March after a pothole was found in the south runway of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

The 45cm long, 30cm wide and 3cm deep pothole was discovered at about 6pm on 9 February during a routine inspection.

Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC), a government-owned firm responsible for the management of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, said that flights were delayed by an average of 52 minutes.

“The runway was reopened during the early hours of Sunday after the pothole was repaired.”

According to TIAC, the problem caused a nine-hour delay to a Singapore-bound flight operated by Scoot. The Scoot flight, which departed from Japan’s Hokkaido Airport, was scheduled to arrive in Singapore via Taiwan.

According to the schedule, the aircraft should have landed at Taoyuan Airport at 9:20pm on 9 February and departed at 10:20pm that same day, but it was forced to divert to Kaohsiung Airport after the pothole was found.

TIAC said that the runway was reopened during the early hours of Sunday after the pothole was repaired.

The 121 delayed flights consisted of 85 inbound and 36 outbound flights. Almost eight inbound flights were diverted to Kaohsiung Airport, including four operated by China Airlines, two by EVA Air, and one each from Scoot and Tigerair Taiwan, according to TIAC.

This was not the first time a pothole was discovered in the runway. Problems with the south runway first surfaced in October 2015.

In 2017, the TIAC shut down the runway for 16 hours to repair a crack.

Taiwan’s Aging Taoyuan International Airport in Need of Repair as Crumbling Infrastructure Causes Flight Disruptions

March 15, 2019
Will Lee

After recently celebrating its 40th anniversary, it’s clear that Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport needs to enhance its facilities. On Saturday, a flight of Singaporean budget airline Scoot departed from Hokkaido, Japan en route to the Taiwanese capital when it was forced to divert to Kaohsiung. located on the opposite side of the island, when a pothole was found on Taoyuan’s south runway.

The Singapore-bound flight was flying back to its base at Changi Airport via Taipei as TR893 but suffered a nine-hour delayed thanks to the diversion and a brief hold just north of Taiwan. The pothole was discovered during a routine inspection and although repair work was underway until the next morning, there were a total of 121 flights affected. While most were mere flight delays, eight arriving flights were diverted to Kaohsiung on Taiwan’s southern coast.

Just one day before the pothole crippled the airport, a transformer failure caused a power outage. The airport experienced a blackout for 30 minutes on Friday with Terminals 1 and 2 affected. No flights were canceled during the power outage, but flights were delayed as a result and some passengers were even stuck in the airport’s elevators.

Wang Ming-Teh, the new chairman of the airport, mentioned that the pothole incident was not “an isolated problem,” and that he would identify problems and find their sources. In fact, the south runway was closed for a one-year renovation in 2014, leaving many to wonder why it would be in such a state just a few years into its operation. Wang added that “the airport will improve the water and electricity supply infrastructure.”

Aging infrastructure is not the only problem that the airport is facing as expansion is another issue it needs to consider. The airport has almost reached full capacity and is experiencing lack of ramp space. Recently, two Asian low-cost carriers failed to launch a new service to Taipei due to the capacity issue. The carriers strove for better slots, but couldn’t succeed.

With Starlux Airlines scheduled to begin services next year and EVA Air taking delivery of 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in coming years, the airport knows that difficulties are in its future if it doesn’t remedy its capacity and infrastructure problems. As the main airport of entry for visitors to Taiwan, especially from the West, the airport has a duty to make a good first impression on visitors.

Drone shuts down Taipei Songshan Airport

Authorities to request maximum fine of NT$1.5 million

By Matthew Strong,Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2019/03/15 20:42

(Taiwan News) - Two appearances by a drone shut down Taipei Songshan Airport Friday evening, causing delays and even the diversion of one flight to Taichung, according to the Apple Daily.

By 8 p.m. Friday, the problem had been resolved and flights resumed their normal schedule, but the authorities said they would find the culprit, who could face a fine of up to NT$1.5 million (US$48,500).

A first incident occurred just before 7 p.m., which caused an immediate shutdown of the airport in downtown Taipei City.

Since the unmanned object was not found, officials assumed it had left the area and they allowed services to resume at 7:17 p.m., the Apple Daily reported.

However, at 7:20 p.m. it reappeared on the landing route of planes heading for Songshan. As a result, the airport was shut down, while from 7:29 p.m., only takeoffs were allowed but no landings.

The incidents caused delays for six arrivals and two departures, affecting 589 travelers, reports said. One flight was even diverted from Songshan to Taichung.

Cars had been sent out to track the drone and find the operator. If caught, the authorities said they would ask for the maximum fine of NT$1.5 million.

Concrete blocks, ceiling tiles fall in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport

Concrete blocks, ceiling tiles suddenly fall in entrance hall to Terminal 2 of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport

By Keoni Everington, Taiwan News, Staff Writer
2019/07/16 10:57

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Concrete blocks and ceiling tiles suddenly fell in an entrance hall of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on Monday evening (July 15), but no injuries were reported.

At 9:38 p.m. on Monday evening, chunks of concrete and several massive ceiling tiles suddenly fell inside the entrance hall on the first floor in Terminal 2 of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, reported UDN. According to a preliminary investigation, concrete blocks from an upper floor smashed through the ceiling support structure and caused the tiles to plummet to the ground.

Fortunately, no one was immediately below the ceiling when the concrete and tiles fell onto the floor. Airport management cordoned off the area, sent staff to inspect the damage, and dispatched a cleaning crew to clear the debris.

The Taoyuan International Airport Corporation said that in addition to carrying out emergency repair operations, it also sent staff to carry out a thorough inspection of the ceiling, reported CNA. Based on a preliminary investigation, the company said that four cement blocks had smashed through the ceiling structure of the entry hall.

On-site personnel have been dispatched to carry out an extensive inspection of the ceiling of the entry hall and the supervisor on duty has directed units to ensure the safety of the structure.

Wow, this terminal 2 is really a disaster.
Style wise, when finished it already looked outdated, like something built in the 90's, and now it's a money pit.
By comparison, the terminal 1 renovation, thus smaller, feels much more modern and "high end".
