New Look at Downtown Pacific Palisades's Grove-Style Makeover

According to the website for the project, the complete, renovated downtown Pac Pal will include a five-screen movie theater (a new iteration of the Bay Theater, which hasn't operated since 1978), a "specialty" grocery store, and more parking courtesy of an underground garage.

The new shops and eateries will be arranged on and around a more pedestrian-friendly Swarthmore Avenue (wider sidewalks, reduced to one car-traffic lane) and the remade downtown's new "centerpiece" will be a park off Swarthmore and Monument, previously a parking lot.

The remodel of downtown Pac Pal is expected to open in late 2017.

California Chrome heads home to Los Alamitos as richest thoroughbred in North American history, with career earnings topping $12.5 million

It has been an eternity, by horse racing standards, since his rags-to-riches run to the brink of a Triple Crown captivated the sport and turned the nation’s eye toward Orange County’s mile-long dirt track here.

Still, nearly two years after wins at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes – and just months after a bone bruise and a rash of questionable decisions put his future in jeopardy – California Chrome is back.

And he might be better than before.

Of course, he never truly left Los Alamitos Race Course.

Moving the Rams from St. Louis to Southern California was no easy task

Most of the trucks had already rolled out of Rams Park, headed west toward the coast.

A steady procession of 30 tractor-trailers had carted away nearly 1 million pounds of equipment, all the stuff that comes with running an NFL franchise.

There were crates of shoulder pads and footballs, whirlpool baths from the training room and a Super Bowl trophy from the display case in the lobby.

Here’s what’s driving California’s strong travel, tourism business

Visit California’s report shows that travel and tourism generated nearly $51 billion in visitor spending and sustained about 441,000 jobs for the five-county area, which includes Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura counties.

Broken out by region, Orange County saw the biggest increase, with tourism spending rising 4.1 percent to $11.3 billion.

That was followed by Riverside County ($7.4 billion, up 3.3 percent), L.A. County ($25.9 billion, up 2.6 percent), San Bernardino County ($4.6 billion, up 2.5 percent) and Ventura County ($1.6 billion, up 1.7 percent).

Beteta said the Chinese market has become particularly important for California’s tourism industry.

“That’s the fastest growing market I’ve seen in my career,” she said. “When we entered that market we saw 899 percent growth in 10 years, and between 2014 and 2018 we’re looking at 65 to 70 percent growth. There’s about $2.6 billion in overall spending coming out of that country.”

Revealed: Big Plans to Redevelop the Burbank Ikea Site

A new Burbank location for Ikea is now under construction, and when it's finished next spring, the Swedish retailer will move into the biggest Ikea in the US and leave behind its old space in the Burbank Town Center. What will become of that store and the shopping center that surrounds it is the focus of a huge new redevelopment project from Crown Realty & Development and Texas-based CAPREF Manager, LLC, according to a release from the joint venture.

Developers have launched a campaign for the redevelopment called I Heart Burbank to support the dramatic changes they're proposing for the center. Their overhauled property would have an open-air plaza, 40,000 square feet for "fresh retail tenants," and open space for things like a farmers' market. The mall will get upgrades to its interior and exterior, and add outdoor dining options at its entrance on Magnolia Boulevard.

Snapchat Taking Over Tons of Space at Santa Monica Airport

Instatiable Snapchat's gobbling up real estate again, but this time it's spreading into another coastal neighborhood: Santa Monica. The messaging app has signed an almost $3 million-a-year lease for nearly 80,000 square feet of space at the Santa Monica Airport, reports the Santa Monica Mirror. The lease is good for at least five years.

Snapchat was probably pretty excited to find this much space together in Santa Monica, given SaMo's notoriously tight market for office space. The app's scored two office buildings on Donald Douglas Loop North totaling 70,473 square feet, and eight hangars which amount to 8,900 square feet combined. All are city-owned property, and the rent will range from $2.9 million a year to $3.2 million a year, depending on the year.

NFL awards 2021 Super Bowl to Los Angeles

Four months after giving the Rams the green light to return to Los Angeles, NFL owners on Tuesday awarded the city the right to host the Super Bowl in early 2021, after an absence of 28 years.

The game will be played at the soon-to-be built $2.6-billion Inglewood stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2019 season.

In what could be a first, L.A. – in head-to-head competition with Tampa – received a super-majority consensus in the first round of voting. That means it got at least 24 of 32 votes on the secret ballot.

Dramatic Makeover in Pacific Palisades Gets the Go-Ahead

It was with that enthusiastic introduction that the City Council on Tuesday gave Caruso—who built The Grove and Americana at Brand—the final approval he needed to begin a major overhaul of the community’s downtown.

The project, called Palisades Village, will span 3 acres bounded by Sunset Boulevard, Monument Street, and Albright Street and include the demolition of six buildings, a gas station and parking lots.

That will make way for an outdoor shopping mall made up of eight new buildings. The Village will also include a park, restaurants, offices, and eight residential units, plus a "specialty" grocery store, community room, bank, and restoration of the Bay Theater, which hasn't operated since 1978. Caruso has pledged to build three levels of underground parking with 560 spaces.

Renderings show cobblestone walking paths and white storefronts with blue-and-white-striped awnings and shingled roofs, making for a Cape Cod-vibe that fits with Caruso’s signature nostalgic Main Street-look.

Construction on his newest project is imminent. The Village’s Facebook page says crews will begin relocating storm drains June 27.
