Finally worth re-opening this thread.

Amazon Chooses 20 Locations as Finalists for New Headquarters
Quote:
Amazon said on Thursday that it had whittled the list of possible homes for its second headquarters down to 20, including centers of technology like Boston as well as some surprise locations like Columbus, Ohio.

The company, based in Seattle, selected the finalists out of a pile of more than 238 applications submitted by local officials in Mexico, Canada and the United States — all of them eager to attract the 50,000 high-paying jobs the company says it could bring. When the unusual public contest was announced in September, it set off a public charm offensive by the applicants, with many local officials trying to entice Amazon with tax breaks and other benefits.

Disappointed Detroit and Cleveland aren't on the list. Would have been nice to see St Louis as well. And KC isn't there but I'm not surprised.

I'm most surprised that Detroit *didn't* make the list. Obviously I have no idea what was in their bid, but this would have been a great opportunity to boost a city that could really use it.
Anyway, Go Philly!

I really don't think Amazon would be going through all this trouble if they weren't actually intending to go ahead with this.

And it should be noted, Seattle submitted a bid (as did Tacoma) but they aren't on the list. So anyone who thought this was just a bid by Amazon to extract more incentives from the State of Washington is looking rather silly right now.

The thing with Detroit is that they obviously didn't lose out because of its lack of transit (because otherwise, how do you explain Raleigh, Nashville and Indianapolis?).

Detroit's just a hard sell with its perception (rightly or wrongly) of being a crime-ridden, bankrupt, impoverished, has-been hellhole.

I was thinking the exact same thing, Steely! To me, all three of these are pretty much the same place!

Other than that glaring issue (and the notable lack of Detroit being included), most of the cities remaining are pretty much the ones I thought would be there. Perhaps Columbus and Indianapolis are a bit of a surprise, but that's just my $.02.

Interesting that Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has already specified that the state would push for the Amazon site to be more or less co-located with the new Under Armor site and redevelopment, here:

Anyway, here are the cities I'm rooting for, in approximate order.

Chicago
Pittsburgh
Philadelphia
Columbus
Indianapolis
Newark
New York

And as I said earlier in this thread, the two cities I'm rooting against are:
Atlanta
Dallas

Most of the rest I'm indifferent to, or don't think they have good chances (like, Nashville).

No more shocked than I am about NYC and LA being on the list.

Glad to see Toronto make the list even with the blunt objection to any government incentives. Don't really expect it to happen but at least they satiated our desire a little longer.

I'm not shocked about Miami. It's one of the "sexier" spots on the list. Arguably the best weather-wise despite hurricane threats.

Out of the 20 who can benefit from it the most? Who needs an Amazon and who doesn't? And why?

LA was a shocker too, but Miami is a head-scratcher... for me. NYC makes sense in some ways, but not on cost. Miami doesn't make sense to me for any reason. That was a true dark horse.
