This next one is more of a minor picture thread. In June of last year I went to see Paul Simon in concert at the Starlight Theater, which is located next to the zoo. Which, in turn, is located several miles southeast of downtown in a big park that's in the middle of a pretty sketchy area, but is popular nonetheless. While I was there I took some video and photo shots. I'll link to the video in just a bit. In the meantime here are the photos.
These first ones I took just a few weeks ago. When I was at the Paul Simon concert I didn't get too many photos of the exterior of the theater, so I went back and took some of those.

Closer in to the east entrance. Zoo is basically just behind me.

That small figure with the white hat in the middle of the stage is Paul Simon. The theater is actually fairly big, so when I bought the tickets I didn't know how far back I was really going to be, since I'd never been there before.
And here's a link to the segment of my "Summer Time in Kansas City" video that has the Paul Simon concert. Be sure to have your speakers on for appropriate music.
Great pics. I have many fond childhood memories of Starlight Theater. Lovely space really. The park it is in, Swope Park, is huge and frankly too far from the city center. Also, as you say, the neighborhood is somewhat sketchy.
Look up the history of Swope Park and the man who gave the land to the city, Col Thomas Swope. His death was a national sensation! Did his nephew-in-law kill him and two other family members - tune in! -
