Historic Vancouver Videos

There are nowadays some very nice historic Vancouver videos online, so perhaps it is in order to have a collective thread for them.

As i think none such thread already exists, I shall start one with an interesting video of the 80's economic strategy for Vancouver which ended up materializing much like planned. So many big projects were outlined in this plan that moved Vancouver towards the city it nowadays is. I hope the decisions made today will bear as good fruits in in the 2040s and make this city even more successful.

A Study in Black and White: an economic strategy for Vancouver in the 1980's

Not sure if the Vancouver Rising Tumblr site has been featured here before, but they have some very cool historic clips of Vancouver!

A short film about the construction of the Lion's Gate Bridge. Hardhats were all the safety harness needed!

I thought these would be interesting on their own, and relevant to provide a sense of scale when discussing current planning decisions.

North Vancouver looks pretty similar afar as today. Not too much has changed in past 30 years as per that video.

I liked the aerial video. Never seen it before.

What an amazing video from a pivotal time for this city. Those people surely had the vision that made Vancouver what it is today. All the building blocks are there in their vision with the emphasis to have enough people live in Downtown and reclaim the shoreline. Livability is even being mentioned few times, so it has always been a goal in mind.

Interesting that the original model called for much less density than ended up being built. Seems that density in general was a topic at the time, as it still is. Also traffic and especially parking were big topics back then. This is few years before SkyTrain, obviously, when cars still played a key role in transportation. Must have been difficult to fight that trend back then.

Nice comments about Granville Street and Pacific Center as well. One thing I didn't understand were the many complains about Cambie Street Bridge. What was wrong with it around 1983? Did they rebuild it or something?

That reporter was annoying, but Mr. Erickson and Mr. Podmore really hit the nail in the head. Historical stuff indeed.

The old Cambie St Bridge was a rickety, narrow old swing bridge that had a tendency to catch fire from time to time. Believe it or not, when the city decided to replace it, there was a faction within the usual Vancouver nimby faction that protested and wanted to keep it.

Haha, you make the fires sound like a feature. Thanks for the info, though. NIMBYs be nimbys...

Another video of the construction of Lions Gate Bridge from 1938.

Video Link

Driving across the completed bridge in 1947. Note how much lower the bridge deck used to hang. Funny how little there was on North Shore at that time. I wonder if the tolls ever paid back the investment in the bridge?

Video Link

Also an interesting video from 1993, before the rehabilitation. Funny comments around traffic congestion in Downtown, already 23 years ago.

Video Link

I wonder how many lanes the bridge would have if built today? My guess is 6 lanes which hopefully would be stacked (one in tunnel) through Stanley Park, if not both. Or perhaps it would not even happen in this time and age. Plowing through virgin Stanley Park feels like an odd thing to even think about these days.

Construction of Canada Place in 1984.

Burrard Inlet from Second Narrows to Lions Gate Bridge in 1951. Interesting how both road and train traffic used to use the train bridge that's still there. There also used to be car ferries over the inlet to North Vancouver?

Pattullo Bridge under construction back in 1937. People of today don't know that also Pattullo used to be tolled, just like all crossings back in the day.

Vancouver skyline in 1984 with Expo'86 under construction. This view has changed so much!
