manthey kula architects: roadside reststop akkarvikodden

along a scenic tourist route in lofoten, norway, is 'roadside reststop akkarvikodden', a toilet facility completed by oslo-based manthey kula architects. part of an initiative to install observation platforms, stopping points and connections to existing points of interest, this structure creates a hybrid experience of nature and design. a replacement to a previous restroom which was destroyed in a coastal storm, the weight of the 10mm corten steel walls are cast into concrete foundations and welded together with steel plate reinforcements.

Trollstigen Plateau: 500,000 Sq. Feet of Gorgeous Pathways Overlooking Norway
by Tafline Laylin, 12/06/11

Trollstigen Plateau in Romsdalen is one of the dreamiest, most magical landscapes along the National Tourist Route of Norway, and Reiulf Romastad Architects won the daunting task of making it even more dramatic with a series of minimalist pathways and platforms. The only way that design can triumph over nature in a setting like this is to take a step back and let the mountains and the waterfalls do all the talking, which is exactly the approach the designers took for this enormous project.

That entire road is lined with masterworks of modern design. I remember an exhibit in the National Building Museum a few years ago where they displayed several of the interventions/pavilions.

I've got to imagine that's one of the coolest road trips in the world.

Italian Lake House is a Sun Worshipper’s Dream Retreat

Most homes are built with a mind to how natural light will affect the interior and the residents living there, but none are more mindful of changing natural light patterns than the Sun Slice House on Lake Garda in Italy.

gracia studio: endémico resguardo silvestre

scattered along the sloping terrain of valle de guadalupe, mexico, 'endémico resguardo silvestre' is a cluster of twenty hotel rooms, designed by san diego-based practice gracia studio. positioned within a landscape of vineyards, each ecoloft has panoramic vistas overlooking the scenic valley below. placed upon steel stilts, the 20 square meter cubes hover above the rocky ground, minimally interfering with the savannah continuing underneath. corten steel was selected to surface the small structures, aging with time to blend into the rustic hues of the encompassing nature.

cor-ten really seems to work with these old buildings. it must be that it just looks old too, or that the colour goes well with the roof tiles:

GROUP A: workshop steigereiland

dutch architecture practice GROUP A has sent us images of 'workshop steigereiland', a multi-level factory and office building on the edge of ijburg, amsterdam, the netherlands. conceived for two companies that required a large facility for simulations, the design stacks a set of 8-meter high factory spaces on top of the other to delineate a simple and pragmatic building.

Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawai'i

The whole "core 10" thing doesn't work at all in a saline climate. Instead of forming a "tight rust" coating, the steel kept rusting and eventually a lot of lawsuits and replacement work later, the whole thing was repainted in the same color. The stadium can be configured for different events - altho last I heard, they seldom do it anymore because the hydraulics are expensive to maintain/doesn't work so good anymore.

From Photobucket:

Football Configuration

Baseball Configuration

John Hancock Center, Chicago

I'm surprised nobody posted this one yet - that's the first thing I thought of when I think of "core 10" rusting steel.
